I've never never been very good at thread searches so I couldn't turn up any previous discussions about this score and the story behind its replacement in US versions of the film.
I got the CD on the basis of a recommendation a few years back and was really blown away. It quickly became my fave John Scott score ( the end title music is spectacular). I had never seen the movie though.
I just managed to get the DVD for a low price and watched it. Surprise! The score was by Bruce Rowland and IMHO just didn't serve the film well at all. Now the film is not great, but it would have been a bit more exciting with John Scott's music instead of the exceedingly low-key Rowland score.
Anyway, after a little on-line research I learned that European prints of NORTH STAR featured the Scott score. However, only the US version seems to have made it to DVD. Even though the film seems to have been largely financed ( and filmed..Norway fills in for Alaska) in Europe, I can't find a European DVD. Even amazon.co.uk and amazon.fr only seem to offer the US DVD as an import.
Has anyone seen and been able to compare both versions and is anyone aware of a DVD with the Scott score?

Sorry I am not able to answer your questions about the European print of "North Star" and its absence on DVD.
I do share your love for John Scott's score; I feel this is the most memorable John Scott soundtrack from the 1990s.
I made a reference to this Scott entry in an previous thread regarding a poster's wish-list request for an FSM box set of John Scott soundtracks (which would be highly unlikely).
I also created a thread called "Patrick John Scott" wherein I reference his late '60s scores, none of which are available on CDs.
If you like John Scott's "North Star", I hope this will motivate you to explore his music from previous decades - there are many John Scott soundtracks worthy of attention...

If you go to ebay and do a search in DVDs for "north star caan" and then scroll down to the bottom, you'll find a Region 2 DVD from Spain listed (not cheap). If you should decide to buy it, I'd e-mail the seller first to make sure that it has the Scott score.

According to the Spanish poster for the film, Scott did the music. (See first credit on the third line of the enlargement.)

It's a wonderful score. I'll have give it a listen again, it's been awhile. There are still several John Scott scores that REALLY need a cd release.

I can't believe we still don't have Greystoke and Shoot To Kill! A more widely available King Kong Lives would be great too.

I try to introduce as many people as I can to John Scott. He is simply amazing.

It's a fantastic score. I love the 2 last tracks.
I also recommend
Antony and Cleopatra
Shogun MAyeda
Odyssey of the Belem...

Just finished playing this CD, in my on-going journey through the Land of John Scott.
As noted above...Epic, Spacious, Driving and memorable score in that customary John Scott style (basically...brilliant). The opening and closing tracks stagger the senses!
We lost a master of the lovely, memorable long-lined melody last week and while this one is still with us, his lack of scores...opportunities...whatever, is just as much a shame as Horner's too soon passing.
I'm edging closer to the end of my (available on CD) John Scott journey. I think 20,000 Leagues is up next - I cheated and played Mill On The Floss sometime back - I don't know what I'm gonna do when the well is dry, apart from hit them all again...and again.

Oh, I think you're gonna love "20,000 Leagues", Kevin - it's one of his best scores from the '90s!

Yup! Isn't it freaking great!?!? Indeed the lack of opportunities coming his way is infuriating. But at least we DO have so much wonderful music!
