Saw the webpage yesterday and would've sweared the last line at bottom reads "Special Features: Isolated Original Score by Hummie Man / Isolated Unused Score by John Barry", or something of sorts.

I'm sure I wasn't dreaming, because I clearly remember seeing that written and then a huge smile appeared on my face. So I presume they must have amended the webpage for some reason.

Because it's probably not happening.

It was nice that they were trying to do it but I imagine it wasn't in the cards and they corrected the credit.

Huge disappointment if the Barry score isolated track has fallen through though I appreciate TT making the effort to include it.

My fingers are tightly crossed though until we get an official announcement.....

10 hours ago I read something like this:
Special Features: Isolated Music Track / Original Theatrical Trailer
Special Features B: Isolated Music Track / Isolated Music Track with Unused score by John Barry/ Original Theatrical Trailer (or something like this).
Right now I can't see this.
But in any case - it will be available for pre-order in next few hours, and TT says that at that time they will announce final specifications (right now they say "Artwork and specifications should be considered tentative until then").

Here's your official announcement:

6 new titles from TT go up for pre-order today, May 3rd, at 4 pm EST including William Goldman's YEAR OF THE COMET (1992). We had delayed YOTC for several weeks because we were hoping to include John Barry's rejected score, along with Hummie Mann's admirable replacement as Isolated Music Tracks on the Blu-ray, but unfortunately we are unable to secure the rights to the JB score.

The good news is that we have located all of the original session recordings and can confirm they are in pristine shape, with every take of every cue intact. The John Barry music is, as to be expected, charming, and very much in the mode of his early 1990s work - think a contemporary variation on "Dances with Wolves" to give you an idea - it is elegant, luxurious, but perhaps ultimately too lugubrious for the film, which is perhaps why it was replaced in favor of a more upbeat and energetic approach utilized fabulously well by Hummie Mann.

YEAR OF THE COMET was produced by indie studio Castle Rock, whose catalogue has subsequently been folded into WB's massive holdings, and despite our best efforts we have been unable to license the unused score from WB who control these assets. It is our hope that one day a CD of Barry's unheard gem will materialize, but until that day comes there is nothing more we can do at this time.

We are still proud to present YEAR OF THE COMET on Blu-ray as we feel that on the occasion of its 25th anniversary, the film might be reappraised and given a better reception than the one that met it on original release, and the Hummie Mann score is still a delight in and of itself, presented here for your enjoyment.

Thanks for your patience!

J

Since WB is known to be LLLR's territory, could maybe LLLR release it?

Yes, LLL works with Warner.
But I think that as original title was released by Varese, so probably they also have rights for rejected score too...

Interesting question, by the way (not about Year of Comet, but in general) - if Varese (or anyone else) owns title in perpetuity, does it means, that this label also have same rights for REJECTED score (which they, technically, even never released before)?

Chatting with Nick Redman over at the John Barry Appreciation group on FB it appears that Varese own the album rights to the Year of the Comet score, including Barry's rejected score, in perpetuity. If Varese decide that they wish to go ahead with a CD release they need to agree a deal with WB. Only then can a CD release go ahead. With the isolated score for the blu-ray an appropriate deal couldn't be agreed between Twilight Time and WB

With two new Varese releases coming this week, could this be, finally, John Barry's rejected Year Of The Comet? Fingers tightly crossed.

Twelve years this thread has been in existence and yet still John Barry's rejected score for the Peter Yates movie, Year Of the Comet has yet to be released.

If it's not been released by now there must be some heavy, complex rights issue at play.

A real pity.

Don't know nuttin' 'bout no Barry, but Mann's score was a total revelation when I first I heard it some 2-3 years ago. One of those cases where I'd heard about the work for ages, but never really checked it out. Bloody excellent!

When is the Year of the Comet? Maybe that's when it'll be released.

As a side note, let's not forget that one of Barry's themes for this film is an alternate cue for the flying sequence in Howard the Duck. All Barry did was change the arrangement, as heard in the original trailer.

As to how the rest of the score sounds like, hopefully we'll know in the near future. It is important to note, however, that Barry dropped the theme altogether after his score was rejected and never used it again.

Not necessarily. It may have just been them tracking the music from Howard The Duck for the trailer.

The arrangements are different, Steve. Listen and compare.

I doubt very much that Barry would've written a new arrangement of the piece simply to use it for the trailer.

It's most probably a theme used in the film itself.

When is the Year of the Comet? Maybe that's when it'll be released.

If the comet in question is Halley's, it will be 2061.

Sounds about right.

Well, one thing we know for sure is that Barry's score exists, and I'm sure a label like La-La-Land would put it out if they were able. Therefore we must assume that right now there is some impediment, but impediments may get overcome.

Cheers
