He kind of went out on a "low note" as well. After his son put a bulldozer through the door the museum and tried to take off with 20 million dollars in paintings, it came out that Frank Sr was suffering from dementia towards the end. I wonder if it wasn't an onset after his wife's passing; the man was completely lucid when they did the documentary a couple years before.
That documentary "Painting With Fire" can be found as an extra on the "Fire And Ice" special edition DVD set in case anyone wants it. It's a good package deal.
Very sorry to hear this. Any of us who grew up reading comics or Robert E Howard's fantasy novels, or have chosen to go into the business of illustration or drawing comics must take notice of the passing of a giant. Anyone who's ever done fantasy art is ever touched by Frazetta's long shadow.
Just bumped this thread up to state the obvious. This man was an incredible illustrator and painter. I'm studying his art and I am thoroughly amazed by his talent. The movement of his subjects, the intimate knowledge of human and animal anatomy, the beauty of the figures, the striking use of color, and the clever but sparingly use of a pallet knife for texture that makes some of his paintings pop out like 3D. Amazing! Edit: And his expert command of black and white line art.
