Pretty lavish production - and while not a perfect film by any stretch, what entertainment! And a huge score to boot! I got tired of waiting for this to be released on bluray (it already appeared on HD-DVD so what's the hold-up???) so rented the 2 disc DVD. Now that I've discovered Kaper's score I have yet ANOTHER release I have to add to my "must buy" list....oh to have a money tree growing in my back yard!    Posted:   Mar 18, 2010 - 4:21 PM     By:   CinemaScope   (Member) I think this would be in anyone's FSM top five titles. That massive wall of sound just hits you like a sledge hammer. I really like the film. Brando is brilliant, I can't think of any other actor who would dare do that accent, I don't think any other actor could have got away with it. Never could understand the criticism of this film. I avoided it on first release thanks to the carping of critics. Later I caught it at a suburban and was knocked out. Great film, great performances by both Brando and Howard. What was the problem with the critics? God knows. From the original LP to the incredible CD set this album was Kaper's crowning achievement. There is a great story about Henry Mancini and Kaper. When The score was Oscar nominated Mancini also had a score up for an Oscar in competition. Mancini recorded a Theme album that year entitled Our Man in Hollywood (RCA had a whole series of Our Man In.....series with their contractual artists involved in different cities) He was recording the love theme from MOTB and even though he was in competition with the theme for an Oscar he called Kaper to tell him how much he admired the theme. I always have too. Kaper recorded his own solo piano album of his film themes including his wonderful Auntie Mame and The Love theme from MOTB. It is certainly the most ambitious and best executed FSM release of a single score. Kaper's Bounty theme may well be the most magnificent seafaring theme in film music history. Its "full sail" rendition in "Leaving Harbor" may have had an antecedent in Rozsa's "The Mayflower" from PLYMOUTH ADVENTURE a decade earlier, but surely Kaper's music was the inspiration for Goldsmith's "Leaving Drydock" from STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE and Horner's "Enterprise Clears Moorings" from "STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN." The guy at the store asked what it was and I told him it was MUTINY... and that it was recoreded in the 60's. He was dumbfounded! This is what the Hollywood machine could produce at it's peak. Absoslutely incredible scoring and sound!! Breathtaking cinematography and production values and the "wall" of picture that was 70mm Ultra-Panavision. Wonderful entertainment all around. (Trevor Howard was superb, but he usually was.) However, there's no question about the magnificence of Kaper's score. Nor about the glorious FSM preservation of same. Self-indulgence by the brilliant sometimes results in something special. In my book it did this time. (ncidentally, not that I want to turn the thread into loved it/hated it, but I could never take seriously any film that presented Clark Gable as an Englishman.
