I just managed to catch my breath and pick myself up off the floor after seeing this film for the first time. I can't remember the last time I laughed so hard at a movie. Jack Lemmon's performance as the excitable George Kellerman was pure comedic genius.
I also couldn't help but notice the groovy score by Quincy Jones. There wasn't a lot of music in the film, but what was there was really good. I'd love to see this paired on CD with another one of QJ's scores from the era. Has anyone looked into the possibility of releasing this?
It's one of those drive in memory films for me. My father, brother and I were there watching it on a huge outdoor screen several times when it was originally released and making the rounds.
The last scene on board the plane heading back home was sometimes edited from prints.
I've oftened wondered why a soundtrack recording was never produced. "The Out Of Towners" and "The Flim Flam Man" are the first two films with themes that stuck with me years ago.
I also have fond memories of this film, I remember the great 'feel good' factor as I left the cinema. I would love to see more 1960s Quincy Jones scores released, and this one of course.

I'm not sure if this is the album to which drivingmissdaisy was referring, but the theme from THE OUT-OF-TOWNERS appeared on the Enoch Light LP "Hit Movie Themes" on Project 3 Records (PR 5051 SD). The LP was issued in both regular and 4-channel stereo.
That probably is the lp Peter is talking about, i once had it, like all of Enoch Light's LP's. I can't remember ever seeing on vinyl any other recording of that theme, Unless maybe MR Jones did a jazz version of it on one of his albums.By the way i too felt it was one of the funniest films ever made. That scene was still left out when ABC showed the film on their late night Tueday movie in 77.However when hijacking planes became not as fashionable by the 80's the film was shown in syndication uncut.People from New York, do you remember how WCBS IN NEW YORK showed the film plenty of times years ago?

Watched it every time. It may be, after Heat of the Night, one of the first times I noticed Quincy Jones' name on a film when I was a kid.
