I know I've posted to other Explorers threads in the past, so I'll post to THIS one as well! There's not a single bad note in this score... it is ALL WONDERFUL! I remember seeing the film in the theatre and near the end, where the kids are sad because their adventure is over, that last minute of that section of the score (Especially those last four descending notes) when I heard it in the film that first time.... tears welled up in my eyes, chills ran down my spine, goosebumps erupted all over my arms... and I WANTED THAT PIECE, but had to wait until the Intrada complete version came along. And of course, "The Construction" makes me giggle and cry at the same time.... absolute BRILLIANCE! And "Have a Nice Trip?" the perfect summation of the entire score, and as I've said many times before.... I LOVE THAT BOOGIE-WOOGIE SECTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This movie was a seriously weird but entertaining mashup. Goldsmith complemented that well in his score. I wish the movie'd been truly completed, but since it came along in a low-ebb for me, it was a good mood-booster at the time. I'd say mission accomplished--though not profitably--by Joe Dante & Co.

Like GOONIES, EXPLORERS was one of those movies that came out when I was about 2 years too old to be within its target audience. I bought the score when Intrada released it, gave it a try, and ultimately got rid of it. Certainly not because it was bad--it wasn't--but it just didn't resonate with me. It certainly had that '80s Goldsmith feel to it but there are other Goldsmith scores of that era I love and have kept in my collection.

I was in my mid-twenties when I first saw the movie and liked it fine--in fact I like it a lot more than Joe Dante does. They had a whole giant ending planned for it but ran out of money and never filmed it so it's a shaggy dog story, but I love the visuals, the kids are charming, and I even get a kick out of the aliens due to Rob Bottin's prosthetics and Frank Welker's vocal performance of Wak. And I love the score, electronics and all. The end credits are sublime, as is the Dick Miller theme, "Construction," "No Air" and a lot of other highlights. I also love Interspace if you take out all the music for Bob Picardo. Yeah, I was 26 when I saw EXPLORERS, appropriately at an afternoon matinee. I liked it. It was reasonably entertaining, well-done and often funny, but it was also obviously lightweight fare for the younger teen crowd. A movie also though for guys like me that grew up with Famous Monsters of Filmland magazines and Monster models -- and remembered that Joe Dante used to write capsule movie reviews for Castle of Frankenstein. EXPLORES was kind of made to be an instant cult film and that is what it has been. For me, though, it's also been quite forgettable, as have most Dante movies except INNERSPACE which I think is his best movie. Thankfully, he loved Jerry Goldsmith and Goldsmith liked him, so for that reason, I made sure to re-watch EXPLORERS a couple years ago when it popped up in HD on a satellite channel. It was the first time I'd seen it since 1985. It was fun to watch again, but I didn't think any more of it than I did when I was 26. As for Goldsmith's score and the question asked by this thread.... Yes, EXPLORERS is a good score. Is it "really that good"? I don't know. It's no SAND PEBBLES or BLUE MAX or CHINATOWN, but I'd say it serves the film more than adequately, and when you're taking about a Goldsmith score, that's quite adequate indeed compared to most other scores. I bought the Intrada Special Collection edition CD as soon as it was released. Oh, and speaking of Joe Dante/Jerry Goldsmith movies... I was in a Best Buy this weekend and there it was for $7.99 -- the Blu-ray of THE 'BURBS. I bought it. Don't have that score on CD, though. If EXPLORERS ever gets a Blu-ray, I might also buy it -- for $7.99.
