Maybe not a great score, but a very enjoyable one. But don't take my word for it; go to the Deconstructing Goldsmith website, scroll down on the left side until you get to "Explorers" (under 1985), click on it, and read a brief description and listen to the soundclip:

This is definetly one of Goldsmith's more fun scores in the middle 80's while scoring junk like Baby:Secret of the Lost Legend, Supergirl (which isn't all that bad if only they left the freakin film in it's original cut), and King Solomon's Mines.

I'll have to say that Goldsmith's collaborations with Joe Dante have always produced grand scores for movies that aren't
up to par with Goldsmith's music.

I'd also check out his other scores from the Goldsmith/Dante filmography like:

Innerspace
Gremlins
Twlight Zone-It's A Good Life segment
Amazing Stories:Boo!
Small Soldiers
Matinee
The Burbs
Gremlins 2:The New Batch

I add my voice to those who love the score for Explorers. It's one of my favorites. Romantic, dramatic, hilarious...the kind of mix only the Dante/Goldsmith collaboration can produce.
I'm sorry that the Varese CD doesn't include more of that wonderfully melancholy theme for Dick Miller. It's a masterpiece.

The only music from the film I have is the end title music, yet I have two recordings of it (!) - the original version, which is included in the 4-disc Warner Brothers 75th anniversary anthology, and a rerecording by Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops on Fantastic Journey, the fourth album in their series of fantasy/sci-fi score excerpt anthologies. I must agree with the others - Goldsmith's work is, as usual, quite good. smile

EXPLORERS is definitely one of my favorite Goldsmith scores, not just because I like the music, but because it makes me think about my own childhood. I'd love to have a Varese Deluxe Edition. INNERSPACE, too.

Yeah, I have the original and boot to INNERSPACE, and it would make a great Deluxe CD !

I remember actually being a bit disappointed by it when I got it several years ago (and consequently proceeded to trade it away). Seemed directionless and a tad schmalzy. But the synth-loaded theme for that cheesy green alien was nifty.

I would probably not have traded it away today, though.

What Chris said. Dang, was I disappointed when the theme for the helicopter pilot (Dick Miller) wasn't on the original release. This one could use an expanded edition (Gremlins could use one, too, but then we all know that).

This score, Explorers is one along with Innerspace and Gremlins I want on a expanded scores of Jerry Goldsmith. I want the helicopter theme, and there are other cues i want to hear also. I think the movie, THOUGH i could of done with out the smart-ass ending, on a whole was a good flic.

I know they spent over 30 million on a flic that didn't make squat at the box office. But i can always hum the themes and really want to add this Goldsmith classic to my collection.

I would agree with Thinredline and others who rank Explorers as one of Goldsmith's fun (rather than great) scores. (I ignore the "pop" songs.) It is certainly in keeping with the feeling of King Solomon's Mines and Supergirl, both very competent, light and enjoyable scores. As long as you are not expecting Masada or Star Trek The Motion Picture, and the heavily synthesized sound doesn't bother you, you should find it to be worth the listening. (The cue called "The Construction" gives one an interesting sense of being busy, that is to say activity focused on some goal. I can do without the "doo-whoop" beginnning of "She Likes Me." Other parts are "ethereal" and "soaring," and the whole thing has a sort of child-like enthusiasm that I think was quite appropriate and effective in the film, which is, after all, a somewhat silly fantasy about children encountering aliens.)

Explorers IS good though NOT great! It's a fun listen, though I rarely play it.

David, I know you're still exploring Goldsmith's output so I have to ask if you have (or have heard?) Jerry's score to LEGEND?! If not then I would seriously suggest changing your priorities over getting Explorers, LEGEND is, without doubt one of THE greatest fantasy scores of all time and definitely one of Goldsmith's very best! indeed, there are some people on this board who consider it his very bestsmile For me it comes secound only to Star Trek:TMP!

How taste change after fourteen and a half years. Legend is still in my top ten Goldsmith but it was quickly usurped by Varese's remastered The Final Conflict which I always loved but hated the original Varese release which sounded awful.

Personally, my favorite variation of the Goldsmith sound came between roughly 1981 and 1987, so Explorers is one I wholeheartedly recommend. In some ways I suppose, it's his The Blue Max for an '80's Dante generation.

Is it "good," though? Hell no. It ain't bad either. Music isn't good or bad. [Sorry; it's become a pet peeve of mine to see the words "good" and "bad" tossed around like frisbees.] Explorers is a well-structured linear score, featuring music that a lot of people [myself included] really enjoy.

But get Legend, too. wink

Dan

Add me to the list of recommendations, and I'd like to offer this as my vote for the best line from the film, which surely must be...

"Look, I know I must look weird to you but how do you think you look to me? Listen, I watched four episodes of "Lassie" before I figured out why the little hairy kid never spoke. I mean, he rolled over, sure, he did that fine but, I don't think he deserved a series for that."

You gotta love Dante. I would agree that this is a fun and wonderful score. Very few people can write music that evokes flight as well what Goldsmith did for this film.

It's a shame the official album wasn't more inclusive. In addition to theme Chris mentioned, Goldsmith wrote a sensitive piece for the sinking of the ship that can indeed be ranked with his great works. The album's still a blast though.

Anyone know if there's an EXPLORERS DVD planned, perhaps a Special Edition with the TV-only footage added to the film? And on the subject of Dante movies, where the heck is an INNERSPACE DVD already!? I want that one now!

Well, for some reason, I thought that an Explorers DVD (widescreen, with no features) existed...but I just checked www.amazon.com and I guess one has yet to surface. I loved this film's first hour (or so) but I thought the aliens were too goofy (I found them unfunny) and it was a departure from the intelligentness of the first hour.
The score cd: I like it, though it may in fact be my least favorite Goldsmith. It worked wonderfully in the film. The Construction is my favorite track...followed by Sticks and Stones (the underscore of a scene deleted in the final cut but shown on TV versions). I don't remember the theme Goldsmith composed for Dick Miller's character, I guess I'll check it out next time I see the movie.
I would absolutely get Legend first...not only is it one of the greatest fantasy film scores of all time, it's my favorite Jerry Goldsmith.
