This is definetly one of Goldsmith's more fun scores in the middle 80's while scoring junk like Baby:Secret of the Lost Legend, Supergirl (which isn't all that bad if only they left the freakin film in it's original cut), and King Solomon's Mines. I'll have to say that Goldsmith's collaborations with Joe Dante have always produced grand scores for movies that aren't up to par with Goldsmith's music. I'd also check out his other scores from the Goldsmith/Dante filmography like: Innerspace Gremlins Twlight Zone-It's A Good Life segment Amazing Stories:Boo! Small Soldiers Matinee The Burbs Gremlins 2:The New Batch

I add my voice to those who love the score for Explorers. It's one of my favorites. Romantic, dramatic, hilarious...the kind of mix only the Dante/Goldsmith collaboration can produce. I'm sorry that the Varese CD doesn't include more of that wonderfully melancholy theme for Dick Miller. It's a masterpiece.

Dang, was I disappointed when the theme for the helicopter pilot (Dick Miller) wasn't on the original release. This one could use an expanded edition (Gremlins could use one, too, but then we all know that).

This score, Explorers is one along with Innerspace and Gremlins I want on a expanded scores of Jerry Goldsmith. I want the helicopter theme, and there are other cues i want to hear also. I think the movie, THOUGH i could of done with out the smart-ass ending, on a whole was a good flic. I know they spent over 30 million on a flic that didn't make squat at the box office. But i can always hum the themes and really want to add this Goldsmith classic to my collection.

I would agree with Thinredline and others who rank Explorers as one of Goldsmith's fun (rather than great) scores. (I ignore the "pop" songs.) It is certainly in keeping with the feeling of King Solomon's Mines and Supergirl, both very competent, light and enjoyable scores. As long as you are not expecting Masada or Star Trek The Motion Picture, and the heavily synthesized sound doesn't bother you, you should find it to be worth the listening. (The cue called "The Construction" gives one an interesting sense of being busy, that is to say activity focused on some goal. I can do without the "doo-whoop" beginnning of "She Likes Me." Other parts are "ethereal" and "soaring," and the whole thing has a sort of child-like enthusiasm that I think was quite appropriate and effective in the film, which is, after all, a somewhat silly fantasy about children encountering aliens.)

It's a shame the official album wasn't more inclusive. In addition to theme Chris mentioned, Goldsmith wrote a sensitive piece for the sinking of the ship that can indeed be ranked with his great works. The album's still a blast though.
