I played this score today for the first time in ages.
A bit of a strange one from Horner, to me.
Much like A FAR OFF PLACE, there are sections were I suspect his orchestrator may have completed the cues. Some tracks sound disimilar to the usual Horner licks, and one cue is very similar to other works by Don Davis, who helped orchestrate this one.
There is no denying the origin of the scores main themes. They are trademark Horner...and the softer melody is one of his most beautiful compositions. ( I'm sure I'll find out here what classical work it's based on now wink )
Anyway, any other fans of this score?

It's a decent score but nothing too special...especially in comparison to Land Before Time. That Circus track is rather crazy, though.

I agree, although We're Back is a fun score, nonetheless. It's been at least a year since I listened to it, so I can't remember much about it, but I was especially fond of the main theme and the Grand Slam Demons track. I also recall a segment of another track where the entire brass section of the LSO were intentionally playing flubbed and wrong notes (I wonder how much fun they had with that!).

Yeah, I feel that way about this at times, too. "Hot Pursuit" in particular sounds more like Silvestri than Horner. It's still fun, though.

And the bad guy theme in We're Back is a bit similar to Elfman's Beetlejuice?

It certainly is a fun score but IMO probably the least of the Don Bluth scores. Before there was any reissue of this one I'd want a complete, remastered
Land Before Time
Balto (more than 15 minutes of GREAT music could be added to this one)
Secret of NIMH (don't even get me started)

at the very minimum.

Not a Don Bluth movie (and neither was Balto, for that matter).

I am shamed to admit this, but most or all of the Horner animation scores are f***ing
masterpieces for me, and sometimes I can't figure out why. They have a certain gravitas
that is not found in other works of his or others - they are heartfelt but not too sugary,
cartoony but not too 'Stalling'...it's really weird, I'll take this riddle to my deathbed, but
I like them all.

Dang, you're right! But We're Back in particular feels very...Bluth-y.

I like the score very much but help me:
I think I remember reading a statement from an orchestrator who once said that he wrote some cues for Horner (perhaps not on this particular score but in general). Does anybody else read that?

Yeah Stephan, like I said in my opening, you can tell some cues from this score (plus A FAR OFF PLACE and maybe THE PAGEMASTER) are not your typical Horner cues. I'm sure his orchestrators must have been given a chance to flex their muscles.

Me too today (some year later). Really enjoyable Horner!
If you find this around grab it, you won't have a 2nd possibility.

Ironically, just a few days ago I popped this into the old disc player and gave it several spins. Tons of fun and my Daughter Zoe especially liked the circus-y music! I agree that if you haven't picked this up, this is a very well developed score with some terrific themes!

Probably his most "mickey mousey" animated score. But there are certainly standouts. "Flying Forward In Time" and the already mentioned "Grand Demon Parade" are outstanding cues. Over all a very nice score if you edit it a bit here and there.

With the film coming to Blu-Ray this fall...any possibility of a reissue or expansion of this? So many of those early-90's Horner scores are going for stupid prices on eBay and Amazon. frown

Seems to be available pretty cheap "used". I'm all for expansions but I don't know if there's anything substantially missing. Not a fan of the film, just the music. I think I only saw it once, so I don't know what else there is musically speaking.

Best antidote. iTunes. We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story (Music From the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) by James Horner
