This thread is taking me back to 1978, when I turned my back on The Swarm soundtrack in the record store even though I was eating up Coma and Capricorn that same year.
I mean, come on, Irwin Allen? I loathed disaster movies, didn't even own William's Earthquake until the 90s. And all those star photos running along the bottom - no way.
But in the late 80s, I stumbled on a used cassette of The Swarm, and I listened to it all the g-d d-m time! Wow, what a fool I had been.
And then the Prometheus release came out on CD. I even watched the movie to see what was missing, god help me.
And I found that in this case, too much was just about enough!
Yes, the original album was a great representation, but there is so much great music in addition, that in this case, the repetition just doesn't bother me.
Been giving the prometheus CD a lot of listening lately and had forgotten how great this score really is. Apart from the great set pieces like The Bee's Picnic and The Bee's Arrive, there is the wonderfully mischievous The Boys and the Bee's which was not on the LP. The LP presentation however is long overdue on CD and I can't help but love that sparse 70's cover art.
It was always my impression that the LP of THE SWARM was a re-recording, like so many '70s soundtracks. Is that not the case? Can you actually make the LP program out of the Prometheus? I love both as listening experiences and would definitely like to see a re-release of the LP with its fantastic cover art.

LP is not a rerecording just some clever editing. Would love to see the major labels look at this one and do a 2 CD with complete score on one and LP and alternates on other. And use the LP cover.
Just been listening to MYSTERIOUS ISLAND by Bernard Herrmann and, after all these years giving JG the credit for creating that amazing 'orchestral buzz sound' for the bees, I'd forgotten old Benny had already laid it all out for him in the Giant Bee cue. My ears did a double take at first, and I had to check somebody hadn't used some sleight of hand to switch the discs in my player!

I think it's fair to say that both Herrmann and Goldsmith were having some fun quoting Rimksy-Korsakov (specifically the phrase heard at 0:22)...
Goldsmith's sly sense of humor is also audible in the score for The Swarm -- his main motif heard throughout the film is comprised of the notes "B-E-E".
