Glad to see all of the love for Shire and this score in particular. I only know the score from the album, I haven't seen the film, but I've always been curious about it. I'd be interested in an expanded version, though, because what's already there is quite arresting.
Also, the David Shire At the Movies album is a great recording and is worth having even if you have most of the scores represented.
Return to Oz will always hold a special place in my heart - not only is it a brilliant score, it was the first Bay Cities soundtrack release and how I became friends with David. He was one of the greats (and still is) and how producers stopped using him is criminal.
But, never fear, Kritzerland is on the job - and a world premiere Shire is coming. Meanwhile, I have some copies of Return to Oz somewhere if anyone is interested.
Surely I would be interested in the old Cd until the new one comes out. Sounds great.

This extremely similar thread states that the original album master was prepared by David Shire himself, so no need for an expansion.

I am perfectly content with my copy, though a reissue would be nice for those who can't obtain the original release.
Shire prepared the album master for LP...not for CD. It may very well be that he is happy with it as it is, but when did that ever stop any label from getting the rights to expand something???
The CD came out at the same time as the LP, so must assume that he prepared it with both formats in mind, right? I'm pretty sure that the labels would want to get the cooperation of the composer, assuming he/she is still alive, before releasing certain material.
and as haineshisway posted on the other thread:
"The "master" as you call it was prepared with Mr. Shire, so if it's missing anything he knows about it and most likely wanted it missing.
Actually, the LP was issued a considerable time before a CD came out. That isn't to say the idea wasn't germinating at the time, but the CD would offer so much more potential music than an LP.
At the time I bought the LP, Doug Fake told me there were no plans by that label to issue a CD.

"Return to Oz" is a heartbreakingly gorgeous score that firmly reinstates David Shire as a major film composer. I have played "RTO' endlessly since the beautiful Intrada release. I applaud Mr Shire for sharing his brilliance with this masterpiece. What a score!!!!
I couldn't agree more, well said! Ever since Bruce's great CD many years ago, I've played this countless times.

This is a fantastic score that I've loved for years. I eagerly snapped up the Intrada release, and it has a little nice music not on the original.
But I have to wonder, if the Intrada release had been my introduction to this score, would I have fallen in love with it the way I did? Honestly, I think Shire produced a fantastic presentation of his score for the original Sonic Atmospheres LP -- it has all of the highlights, it's tight, there's very little repetition. The full score bogs down a bit, and meanders sometimes.
I'm not knocking Intrada's release (which, after all, also contains the original LP program), but there remains something to be said for a well-chosen, tight listening experience.

This is a great point. I also love the original Oz album (and, of course, this new one), but if the expansion were my only exposure to it, these days I'd probably be finding a way to pare it down. It reminds me when the ET soundtrack first came out, and my youthful disappointment at the missing cues. I later greedily lapped up both expanded CDs and yet...today I find myself turning to that old, original album whenever I want to give this one a spin....
