I've been revisiting old Scores that I feel needed more of my attention than I'd given them. Been listening to this beautiful Score a lot lately. I feel that Peyton Place is to Waxman what The Ghost and Mrs. Muir is to Herrmann. They're both romantic and beautifully lush. So I popped the DVD of Peyton Place into the Blu-Ray and Yikes! Did we really buy this trash back then- even nominated for Best Picture? The movie is kinda laughable now. Actually, Waxman elevates the film a bit. His score nicely combines the serenity of the quiet small town with the emotional turbulence of the characters. But some of those lines:

Lana Turner to daughter Diane Varsi (paraphrasing), "What will you do in New York? How will you survive?"
Diane Varsi responds, "I'll manage somehow and if I don't, I'll live off some men like you did". Sudden fierce dramatic Waxman chord. Gotta love the 50s.

PEYTON PLACE is probably one of my two or three favorite Waxman scores. And I've never seen the film. Probably a damn good thing.

Great score, but I also love the film very much. True, it is very fifties, but that's not a bad thing.

Nice direction, great performances from everyone, beautiful location shooting (in booth Bay Harbor, fox also used for carousel).
We need the complete soundtrack without the reverb. I've also heard there was a lot of music waxman recorded that was not used in the film. Would love to hear it all.

Another one of those soundtracks trapped in RCA hell. I'm a big fan of the film as well, which was, by most accounts, vastly superior to the book.

Great score. Here's a thread I did on it a couple of years ago:

And one of them (Kennedy) was a fellow Carnegie Mellon University Dramat, too!

I know you're right, Ray, but I figure if I'd seen everything worth seeing already I wouldn't have anything left to live for...

With RCA now being under the Sony umbrella, there are many other titles (such as the James Dean scores) that are in the same boat. I wonder if any of these can be resolved, that is if a contract between Fox and RCA looks the same as one between Warner and Columbia.

Back to topic: I'd also like to see a release of this score - along with "A Place In The Sun" (which should now be easier).

Almost 7 years, PNJ. Have you seen the film yet? It might be worth just to see Turner do her usual 83 costume changes.

I would love to see Peyton Place released on CD along with Hemingway's Adventures of a Young Man, two of Waxman's most beautiful scores.

I do believe that one of our favorite labels will indeed release Peyton Place in 2017 for the 60th!!!! Anniversary of the film's release.

Also, FYI Twilight Time has already stated that they will be releasing the blu ray in 2017.

One of the best Americana scores ever, probably seminal.

That "one of our favorite labels" = La-La Land.
