MORE CLASSIC M-G-M WESTERN SOUNDTRACKS RIDE OUT ON NEW 3-CD BOX SET
Film Score Monthly’s third big western set features four terrific scores by Herbert Stothart, Cyril J. Mockridge, Harry Sukman and David Shire
Linden, VA – December 11, 2009 – Film Score Monthly has used listener responses for another roundup of great western film scores with Northwest Passage: Classic Western Scores from M-G-M, Volume 2.
Yes, FSM continues its informal annual tradition of releasing a 3-CD set of classic western film soundtracks with four more original scores from the historic M-G-M film library:
Northwest Passage (Book I – Rogers' Rangers) from 1940 is a grandly adventuresome score by Herbert Stothart, M-G-M's premier composer in the 1930s and '40s, presented in nearly complete form from the monaural optical film masters, with a few otherwise lost cues added from the film's music-and-effects track.
Many Rivers to Cross (1955) is an uptempo, symphonic comedy western score by Cyril J. Mockridge, conducted by no less than Miklós Rózsa, with a song ("The Berry Tree") by M-G-M songwriter and executive Saul Chaplin. This score survives in glorious three-track stereo from the original 35mm magnetic film.
A Thunder of Drums (1961) is a cavalry adventure score by Harry Sukman, also presented in true stereo. Dominated by a serious tone and stirring martial passages, the music also features romantic strains anticipating Sukman's scores for TV's Dr. Kildare.
At the end of disc 3 is a television rarity: David Shire's 1974 TV movie score for The Godchild (a John Badham-directed adaptation of Three Godfathers, a western story filmed several times earlier). It is a brief and spare work demonstrating the composer's gift for simplicity and melody – presented in excellent stereo sound.
The film titles for this album were selected in large part from listener responses to FSM’s previous westerns collection. So keep listening, and keep suggesting titles for future releases!

The previous two western collections (centered respectively around The Unforgiven and The Naked Spur) promptly sold out, so FSM has increased the manufacturing run on this volume to 2,000 copies – but don't delay!

WHAT A SURPRISE!!!
.....and at a great price for three discs!!!
After the releases of BULLITT and the huge ROZSA box set, you wouldn't think Lukas would have time for more in December.
The MANY RIVERS TO CROSS score is delightful and I've been requesting it for years. The surprise, which was revealed to us not too long ago, is that Rozsa conducted it. Fascinating.
(The film is great fun, too, with Taylor and Parker appearing in their final film together.)
There have been many requests for the Stothart NORTHWEST PASSAGE score. In a short time, PASSAGE will be 70 years old, and though the score certainly reflects the recording systems of the time, the sound clips are surprisingly good and will be a great treat for those of us who appreciate these old scores. What particularly surprises me about the release of this score is that it is virtually complete. That would imply that, as suspected, there might be more scores from this early period in the Warner/Turner/MGM vaults which might be accessed in near complete form. Bring on more Stothart, Waxman, Kaper, Amfitheatrof, Tiomkin, Ward, etc.
As a side note, isn't NORTHWEST PASSAGE the "earliest" score Lukas has ever released?
I'm also grateful that Lukas, seemingly unique among all the record producers, periodically goes back and "fixes" production errors on previous releases. On the earlier ESCAPE FROM FORT BRAVO release, I pointed out to him that the mix of the main title was incorrect, he checked and then acknowledged that, and has gone on to fix it with this release. Whatta guy!!! A special "Thank You" to Lukas for that!
I don't recall ever hearing the SUKMAN and SHIRE scores before, but am looking forward to them with great anticipation.
Let's see, if I get just the Rozsa and Westerns box sets for Christmas, that's 18 days of listening, playing 1 disc per day. Then there are the Varese, La La, Intrada and Kritzerland releases awaiting. Why, I won't need another fix until February!
