Here is a man who has a long, looooong career composing music for hundreds of television programs and series (He's probably best known for his music on The Mary Tyler Moore Show), and has only sporadically scored theatrical films.

I'm only familiar with a few of his film scores, namely:

SSSSSSS (1973)
Breaking Away (1979)
Butch And Sundance: The Early Days (1979)

To my knowledge, NONE of these scores have ever seen a recorded release, and that seems to me to be a tragedy!
This man has composed volumes of wonderful music over his long and quite successful career.
WHY can't I find any of it?

Anybody???

Did you know about the release of his score to the mini-series JESUS that came out last year?

Check out AMAZON.COM, it's listed there.

You're right, Chris, not enough releases of this man's music ... though there were a handful back in the LP age - I have CASEY'S SHADOW, MARVIN AND TIGE, JUST BETWEEN FRIENDS, and a Jap LP of BUTCH AND SUNDANCE. He's recently done BLONDE (I think), and also the one that Ford mentions.

Another VERY obscure Williams that made it out to LP was the HARRAD EXPERIMENT sequel, HARRAD SUMMER. He also had a mid-to-late 70's LP out called PAT WILLIAMS - THEMES which featured his themes for the original BOB NEWHART SHOW and LOU GRANT. He later did a slightly different arrangement of the GRANT theme on a later CD whose name escapes me at the moment. This disc also had his obscure theme for Rock Hudson's last TV series, THE DEVLIN CONNECTION.

"DID YOU KNOW" Department--Williams did a
rejected score for the Robert Redford/Robert Blake 1970 Abraham Polonski western, TELL THEM WILLIE BOY IS HERE. This was, of course, replaced by Dave Grusin's fine effort.

Jesus: simple, yet so stunningly beautiful.
Kind of reminds me of Alfred Newman at times.

Wow we're talking about Patrick Williams! Awesome. I had the good fortune to speak with him over the phone. He is a great guy. I also love Marvin and Tige which he did for John Cassavettes. I saw a television film a few years ago that he scored called A Heart Full of Rain and the score was very touching. One score I like of his that's out there on CD is The Grass Harp which was directed by Walter Mathau's son I think.

Mr. K, seems to me most of Breaking Away was scored with adaptations (marvelous ones, too) of Ity music, but deah God, what a beautiful piece of scoring when our cutter friend revealed the truth to the coed. Heartbreaking, crushing, indelible cinematic moment.

Finally, someone talks about this guy. I love Marvin and Tighe definetly one of my faves. of his and sadly not on CD yet. Best Defense is one of my faves. of his that isn't released yet along with The Buddy System. But he's done some really wonderful work worth releasing. I too second the motion of Breaking Away!

Another great (and sadly unreleased) score by Patrick Williams was for the John Ritter film HERO AT LARGE, a very heroric John Williams-like superhero score that really needs to be released someday.

Richard Lester's "CUBA" had a great score, too. "Soundtrack available", promised the one-sheet but it sadly never happened.

Ford, I forgot about that one too. Goofy movie with a heroic score. I think all his work should be released someday.

I loved JESUS and THE GRASS HARP is extremely beautiful. Patrick Williams also composed a very nice score from a 70's I believe, Henry Winkler Movie called THE ONE AND ONLY. I used to listen to the LP endlessly back then. It was a Comedy/Love Story about Winkler as a "Gorgeous George" Wrestler and also starred Television's "Tattoo" Herve'Villachaise. It had a charming Love Theme and some touching sequences. Patrick Williams is a wonderful composer just like Michael Small and Lee Holdridge. Wonderful, Wonderful, Wonderful. Such Talent that deserves more recognition and definately more releases for us to celebrate and enjoy! Happy listening Friends. zoob

np INTO THE ARMS OF STRANGERS Lee Holdridge
(very nice stuff, check it out)

I finally played A SONG FROM THE HEART by Patrick Williams tonight.
It's a composer promo CD that I snagged for about $4 from BSX a few months ago.
It's from a 1999 film, probably a TV or Cable Movie that I've never seen.
The music is a real delight, VERY similar to scores by Lee Holdridge from the 70's and 80's.
As the film appears to be about romance and orchestra musicians, Williams gets to write some real nice violin passages with orchestra and there's a big, lovely OTT track called Song For Maryanne (that should have ended the CD) which is really, really good. Greg's Theme is also gloriously OTT.
Recommended for fans of Patrick Williams and old school light, romantic scores.
