My brain is hard-pressed, though, to even recall any examples from non-English speaking cinema, TV, radio, etc. Who would be some of the French actors, for starters, who (within French-language productions) had portrayed non-French ethnic characters? My memory just recalled 1967's Diaboliquement vĂ´tre (Julien Duvivier's final film) in which a German actor portrayed an Asian manservant within the film's mansion setting. No doubt other examples from French cinema will pop into my mind eventually...

Let's not forget Meryl Streep in this discussion. She is unbelievably authentic in many of her "ethnic" (i.e. "non-American") roles. The best example is her Sophie in "Sophie's Choice." She has an amazing affinity for perfecting dialects. Her Karen Blixen in "Out of Africa" is stunning. Her Sarah and Anna in "The French Lieutenant's Woman" is a tour de force. She is an American actress portraying a French woman and she is sublimely perfect in both roles. One of the most astounding portrayals in cinema, IMO.

I was watching a recent episode of Gunsmoke and was reminded of the versatility of Frank Silvera, who was Spanish Jewish/Jamaican. He also played a wide variety of ethnic parts, but was best known for his western roles, usually playing Mexicans. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Silvera Died from accidental electrocution. Greg Espinoza He was appearing at the time on "The High Chaparral" as Don Montoya and died from that accidental electrocution while repairing his garbage disposal in the kitchen in his home; as a result, his character was killed off as well.
