"It's very important for a composer to have the room, to have the freedom, to explore these things. I tried to do that with Kevin Costner, on his last film, Open Range. I was set to do it. Then Disney called, and they needed a temp track for the movie. And you know what they temp-tracked it with? Starship Troopers! Honest to god! And I heard it and said 'This is not what we talked about. I can't do this'. And I got out of the movie. This is not a space opera! This is very classic western. Absolutely. Very intimate, in the mud, in the rain. Unfortunately, it was the end of Kevin and I relationshionship." Yes, this quote is from a great Basil interview from Ubeda you can read here: http://www.underscores.fr/rencontres/interviews-vo/2008/07/basil-poledouris-interview-vo/ The open Range part is on page 4

The score might underwhelm a bit on CD because it's more restrained than usual for Kamen... but in the (wonderful) film it is utterly perfect, and a very strong final project for him. Yavar

I had this on, yesterday, as it happens, along with Don Juan DeMarco. Two nice ones.

I had this on, yesterday, as it happens, along with Don Juan DeMarco. Two nice ones. There are times I think the latter is my favorite Kamen score. The Iron Giant is probably my favorite marriage of score/film from him, but on album Don Juan DeMarco is probably the stronger listen and more memorable thematically. Would be very interested in an expansion some day, if any labels are reading this. Yavar
