"It's very important for a composer to have the room, to have the freedom, to explore these things. I tried to do that with Kevin Costner, on his last film, Open Range. I was set to do it. Then Disney called, and they needed a temp track for the movie. And you know what they temp-tracked it with? Starship Troopers! Honest to god! And I heard it and said 'This is not what we talked about. I can't do this'. And I got out of the movie. This is not a space opera! This is very classic western. Absolutely. Very intimate, in the mud, in the rain. Unfortunately, it was the end of Kevin and I relationshionship."

Yes, this quote is from a great Basil interview from Ubeda you can read here:

The open Range part is on page 4

I haven't seen this film in years, but I remember really being impressed by it, when I saw it at the cinema.
Solid western drama with good characters/situations and great cinematography.
Michael Kamen's score is unmistakeably HIM.
He had such an identifiable sound and style and I really miss it.
The tension stuff in OPEN RANGE reminds me of his X-MEN tension at some points, and the Main Theme recalls his Waltz from BARON MUNCHHAUSEN.
There are also some lovely, low-key western moments too, albeit far removed from Aaron Copland.
The film wasn't about that and Kamen deftly avoids swamping the drama with too much...too muchness.
The CD, on Hollywood Records (when Disney did CD's) has a generous running time of over 50 minutes (which includes a song co-written by Kamen...I'm not a fan of it).
I remember being slightly underwhelmed by the score, when I first heard it with the film and on CD.
But listening to it now...WOW...it's like a relic from a different time.

The score might underwhelm a bit on CD because it's more restrained than usual for Kamen... but in the (wonderful) film it is utterly perfect, and a very strong final project for him.

I thought this was that Disney movie about barnyard animals. I want that score.

Agreed Yavar.
It suits the film perfectly.
But playing the CD today (first time in a while) and it sounds much better than I remember.

Tracks 8-14 on the soundtrack album are score:

$3.44 on Discogs:

Unless you're saying there are unreleased cues you'd like to get, and you're hoping for a Legacy Collection expansion?

I had this on, yesterday, as it happens, along with Don Juan DeMarco. Two nice ones.

I take it you mean that weird parts 1 to 3 films cd version of Highlander, Kev? A paltry amount of score from the first one (sob!)
Ive been back on the Kamen train after reading through the recent Die Hard 2 thread.

There are times I think the latter is my favorite Kamen score. The Iron Giant is probably my favorite marriage of score/film from him, but on album Don Juan DeMarco is probably the stronger listen and more memorable thematically. Would be very interested in an expansion some day, if any labels are reading this. smile

"I take it you mean that weird parts 1 to 3 films cd version of Highlander, Kev? A paltry amount of score from the first one (sob!)"
-------------------
Actually...no.
Some time ago, I bought a...pressed CD...off eBay...
Expanded 20th Anniv' Edition (some dodgy Australian label/issue..Immortal Records...lovely pic of bonnie Heather on the back too).
Anyway, it runs nearly 90 minutes (it has the Queen songs added and some tracks from that Queen Classical/Symphonic album) and the last few tracks wouldn't play* (thankfully, not score cues) so I filed a Returns/Complaint and got completely reimbursed and told to keep the CD with apologies.
Outside of the Kurzweil stuff, it has everything I ever wanted, in decent quality too.
So I don't pine so much for a complete HIGHLANDER these days.

*probably due to the 80+ run time.

As I said way back in 2009:

"What Scoresalot said. Fine film, touching score (typical Kamen)."

I like to consider this Kamen's farewell score, as that GOYA thing never appealed to me much.

Funny how you get these composer 'obsessions', Kev, where you seem to play through their entire filmography and ressurects threads on his or her work. What spurs it?

Haha. Yeah.
It's usually spurred by either seeing the film on TV and digging out the score and a few others besides.
Or a random post on here (this Kamen flurry was started when Goblin reignited the DIE HARD 2 thread early week).
That starts me digging up old threads or starting new ones, to stir some chat or debate, after I've been blasting through the various CDs.
It would make an interesting topic to ascertain what spurs or compels us to play our stuff when we do.

For me this board often reignites interest in stuff. Not sure what its like for a lot of you out there but i’ve got very few mates that even consider film music a thing never mind wanting to talk about it. I find a lot of the posts here prompt me to dig out something and ‘rediscover’ it trying to see whatever elements are being discussed. Its what makes this place still great after all these years.

*poke* Cheers K & spook!

I used to love that, the unearthing of random scores, revisited. This haven is a little too _______ for it now, but sometimes it's fun to give it a go, take a shot at bringing up Die Hard 2 again, etc....hopefully not ending up like the current & unfortunate Dimi thread battle happening this week. Way to misunderstand phrases and denigrate the memory of one of "our guys"....
Sad.

We DO buy this stuff to listen, enjoy, right? Love it when we can civilly discuss, and remind K here to dredge up those long forgotten shinys.

Enjoy and work those collections folks!!!

Cheers again to all

Agreed Sean.
Civility is missing somewhat around here at times.
So much animosity from our supposed shared love of a super niche category.
And I STILL haven't spun DIE HARD 2 Deluxe Edition yet. big grin
