I really enjoyed this easy listening debut score from Mr. Poledouris. There's alot of variety (you might say too much) in Big Wednesday: large orchestral parts, source music, and tender guitar moments (which are a joy).

One of those rare scores that actually SAYS something about the story...and superbly complements it.

Exactly.

It's my favorite score from my favorite composer.

Wonderful score, and it's remarkably well-done for a feature film debut. FSM's CD release is a dream for Poledouris fans. smile

This was a blind buy for me at the time. I just knew that Basil Poledouris + John Milius = Great Score. And I wasn't disappointed. A friend of mine was quite surprised when she heard a gorgeous symphonic track from this surfing movie, and the Hawaiian Slack Key guitar stuff is very nice. It is also a good example of how a song that is related to the score can be much more effective than one that hasn't been seeded throughout the film.

All together now:

Down along the coast a way,
Lies upon its back today,
The crumple car,
Great decay.

She ran aground in '53,
Now a victim of the sea,
Shore-shapingly,
Left to be,
Just a crumple car.

Up on the finger reef she lay,
Up on the beach in the middle bay,
The crumple car,
Is there to stay.

High tides come and circle her,
Leaving red rust for her fur,
She's not alone,
The ocean kingdom calls her home,
Crumple car.

This was one of those inspiring first scores that actually gave me faith for the future of film music.

1978. What an unbelievable year for film scores.

Listened to the samples tonight. Gorgeous. Have put this one off for too long.

Ordered!

I remember sampling this when it came out and finding it rather boring.

Well, with my new preference for more mellow music, I should perhaps give it another chance. I think it just might be suitable for me now.

Although his CONAN score usually gets all the attention and accolades (it is a masterpiece) I would say BIG WEDNESDAY is my number one favourite score by him, closely followed by RED DAWN.
Due to the fact both scores were NOT available at the time of the films' release, I sucked every ounce of juice from them from watching the films and copying them onto cassette.
In the case of BIG WEDNESDAY, no big deal because I love the film. RED DAWN is another story though! I must have hammered the cue near the end as Swayze drags his brothers body to the bench in the snow, that music is just amazing. So tragic, deep, sombre and resonant.
I always break out in a big goofy grin when watching BIG WED as the four friends start their walk towards the waves near the end. NOW THAT'S FILM SCORING! FRONT!!! CENTRE!!! GLORIOUSLY OVER THE TOP!!!
THE POWER OF POLEDOURIS! smile

Agreed. Right out of the gate, Basil had a unmistakable style - melodic, powerful, infused with great emotion.

That's a coincidence, i just happen to be listening to that score last night, very enjoyable score indeed indicating all the fine music Basil would go on to do.

I picked this up at SAE's recent sale. Iv'e gotta say I've been blown away by this score! What a surprise! This is one of the most gorgeous, thematic and grand scores I've heard in ages. While I'm not a Poledouris completist, I do have quiet a few of his scores but never ever gave this one much notice. So glad I did. This one's a keeper. Can't believe there was never a Commercial LP released at the time of the film.
Grab this one while it lasts. Just gorgeous.

I ran into actor William Katt a month ago at a convention and we had a pretty good conversation about the film and how John Milius has been doing since the stroke.
