Continuing with My James Newton Howard Night (pardon the pun), the next one is Water Horse: Legend of the Deep. It's very decent and worth a second listen. The Celtic parts blending well enough with the orchestral parts, and the main theme is one of JNH's above average efforts. The first part of the underscore on the CD is forgettable for the most part, but the second half of the CD makes up for the first half.

IMO is a functional score, but as a CD to listen to quite forgettable.

Has anyone bought this score from itunes? I noticed that the album there has four extra tracks, and I was curious as to opinions about those four extra tracks. Thanks for any comments. Also, if you are interested in the cd, I noticed www.amazon.com has it on sale for $9.98.

Echoing the last comment. Anyone know anything about the extra 12 minutes of score iTunes had available for download? Apparently they have removed the title altogether from their store.

I think the material is gorgeous and the orchestration is really beautiful. "You Didn't Even Get Wet" and "Swimming" are my two favorites.

I've got the bonus tracks (I bought this: http://www.7digital.com/artists/james-newton-howard-%282%29/the-water-horse-legend-of-the-deep-original-motion-picture-soundtrack-itunes-version-1/) and have never thought them anything to write home about.

Angus Sent to His Room is the neat ethereal bit where he looks at his rainy window.

There are other scores that would benefit more from bonus tracks (although itunes exclusive is absolutely not the way to do it).

James Newton Howard hasn't written a finer set of action cues since "There's No Monster / Saving Crusoe / The Net / The Jump / End of the Story"

This is a lovely score, beautiful and moving, and one of my favorite JNH scores. Reminds me of how taken I was with him early on, when he wrote a lyrical score for MAN IN THE MOON...

I bought this one cheap. I have only listened to it once, to be honest...

The action stuff reminded me of some of his stuff from King Kong (which I loved!) only not as good, but still a worthy listen so that I bought the CD. The iTunes tracks did little for me though.

I agree with others that the second half of the disc is far more memorable than the first half. Especial the last five tracks or so. They are pure James Newton Howard delight. And it reminds me of the great music he used to write.

Seeing him in concert last week has had me delving back into his scores this past week.
My God, parts of this score are absolutely breathtaking in their power and glory!
There are a couple of formulaic tracks, but from track 9 onwards (Run Angus) and the continuous 5 track feast of There's No Monster (15) to End Of The Story (19) is some friggin' powerful stuff.
Then a Far And Away/Chieftans style End Credit Suite to cap it all off.
Truly wonderful music.
This and HIDALGO have rocked me back in my seat with their bloody greatness!
