But for the shear bliss of the experience: THE GREAT ESCAPE DELUXE EDITION. I literally trembled and shook as I placed it in the player. I got chills to hear the fullness of the orchestra and all of the cues I'd always wanted to hear apart from the film (other than one which remains missing for some unexplainable reason, but I digress). Wow!

Kinda obvious, given your screen name. wink

When I go abroad I always pick up some cd's and dvd's and when I was visiting London as a 16 year old student we went to the huge Harrods store in London where I found not one but two scores that I did not expect to find there: "Misery" by Marc Shaiman and "A simple Plan" by Danny Elfman. Two thrillers I was very fond of and I still play those cd's a lot.

Yoko Kanno's score to "Macross Plus" (Vol 1). As one of the anime geeks of the mid nineties before Pokemon and adult swim took the world by storm, I was rather into the niche during junior high. When I was browsing the soundtracks at a Blockbuster Music (yeah, I know!) and came across JVC's release of a Japanese soundtrack.. I was floored! This was before I had even looked into importing soundtracks at exuberant prices, but here was the score for a great robot saga! They didn't even release score albums for half of the movies in the theaters, and here was a disc for a movie I watched over the course of four 30 min video tapes! I snatched it up immediately and was suddenly struck that I didn't realize how beautiful the music (aside from the song, Voices) was from this film!

In more recent years, I could hardly stand the wait for the Christmas when the "Fellowship of the Ring" Complete Recordings was released. My then girlfriend (current Mrs.) had no idea what she was in for on the 3 hour drive to my parents house (and the return trip!!)! While all three of these sets were met with huge anticipation, that first box was a glorious thing. Full of mystery at the time, not expecting the luscious liners, and just the wonder of how much music there was to behold! I hope to enjoy that same sensation with future releases!

REVENGE OF THE NINJA - Music Composed by Rob Walsh - 1983 - Varese Sarabande STV-81195

I searched high and low for this goodold score.

Thanks to the miracle of the "SoundtrackCollector" & "FilmScore Monthly" forums I found
a seller and was able to buy this long lost favourite of mine.

Is that the one where the final battle takes place on the roof of a tall building in the middle of a city? If it is, the music in that final scene is awesome, and I'd get this score if it ever comes out on cd for that alone.

I have to agree with Josh on this one -

I wanted those scores for YEARS, and my jaw dropped when I saw they were all included in one set. It was TORTURE waiting for that thing to arrive.

Hmmm...maybe the Octopussy LP. I literally spent my lunch money on that.

A few years later I passed on the Octopussy CD because, yes, I already owned the LP (d'oh!).

When I left school, I had about 20 lPs and hundreds of CDs. I left the pile of LPs with the theatre dept with the idea that the three or four albums I hadn't already replaced with CDs, eventually would be. It took only a few years, but that did happen- Octopussy and all.

Similarly, The Empire Strikes Back LP.
I vowed to play it completely through from beginning to end whenever I did play it so as to create even wear across all tracks. I thnk the Imperial March got a little more play than the other tracks, inthe end.

In 1985 I was on my way back to the US via Hong Kong where I bought myself a Sony D-5 CD player and two CDs- Star Wars and Raiders of the lost ArK. Then I bough Cocoon in Hawaii a few days later 'cause it was the first soundtrack listed in the end titles as 'available on LP, Cassette, and CD'.

More recently it has been albums for 'Fulmetal Alchemist', 'Ghost in the Shell', and BSG.
Such thrilling music for so many different reasons.

I guess that counts as more than one...

It is that film:

I don't understand it. How come that fifteen colours of kack gets printed by the truckload but a soundtrack like this one is still not out on CD? As soon as it's released on CD, I'll stand in line with my ninja-to, shuriken and kamaragusi to ensure I'll get a copy.
For all it's silliness it's still a hugely entertaining film and for a synthesizer score it ranks up there in the top 10 of all synth film scores.

Oh and whilst I going through the best memories of my life through association with violent sill but oh so fun films: I cannot else but demand that the superb "Gymkata" soundtrack be released on CD too.
We had "Sky bandits" so why not complete it with its superior predecessor?
Just listen to the goodness that is 06:12 to 09:37

I hope it will be either Intrada or LaLaLand that releases this classic in the near future in it's complete form.
If Varese releases it, it will be a straight reissue of the LP.
And the LP contains only half the score Rob Walsh's synth music.

REVENGE also features orchestral music from ENTER THE NINJA composed by Laurin Rinder and W. Michael Lewis.

I was in contact with mr. Rinder a few years ago,
about obtaining a copy of the score but he did'nt own the rights to it anymore.
But he told me that he and Lewis made some additional music for REVENGE to fit with Walsh's synth score.

Some of it can be heard in this clip
(Here's music from both Enter and Revenge).

With LaLaLand just releasing Runaway Train & Allan Quatermaine it would'nt be impossible.

Too many wonderful releases = too much excitement. I couldn't even begin to single out *one* specific score that generated the most excitement...

I spilled my milkshake over the recent expanded Carpenter scores: Halloween 3, They Live, Prince of Darkness and Big Trouble in little China.

Didn't spill my milkshake, but Halloween 3 and PoD are ones that I can recently remember as "YES!" -- "It is MINE for the taking!!!"

*And I think ST II is the *most* recent release that had me singing praises to the FSM gods...

For me it was when Varese first released Jerry Goldsmith's THE FINAL CONFLICT. I was gutted at the time of the film that there was no soundtrack so this was a dream come true.
More recently the same definitely goes for James Horner's SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES. Thanks Intrada!

Would have to be the original LP for Budd's The Stone Killer.

CDs? probably The Wild Bunch.

Probably the two albums I was most excited about getting were Morgan & Stromberg's THE SON OF KONG / THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME and Dave Shechter's THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS (one of his MMM compilations). I have to say that both albums far exceeded my hopes and expectations as being thrilling and remarkably faithful re-recordings. Not that these scores are #1 favorites but that heretofore they were completely unrepresented in any form.

Of course, my longstanding anticipation remains for.....well, John, you know.

Now that John Debney has been signed on for Iron Man II, I would have to say Iron Man II!!!!

But, since the question is WERE, I would have to say my copy of Logan's Run. Found the
LP in a used record store and then not knowing it was released a few times on CD, was able to
get the FSM CD copy!

Intrada's A L I E N
I owned the Silva edition for years, but wanted more (don't we always...).
I never believed it would come out in a sublime package like this.... (still impressed by that)
Before that (early 80's) it were the vinyl records of: Twilight Zone, E.T.,
and The Emerald Forest, I had searched and asked everywhere for that title,
no one could/would help, until somebody at a classic record store ordered it for me.
I didn't believe that it would work until some weeks later
the Varese record was finally in my (shaking and sweaty) hands.
That one's still a favourite of mine.

Well guys, I just received a perfect copy of Varese's BLOOD IN BLOOD OUT and couldn't be happier with it! This score along with THE RIGHT STUFF are the scores I was the most excited to buy. I still can't believe I have a copy of BLOOD IN BLOOD OUT! I'm so happy!

Great clips. Thanks for posting.

Interesting story. When I first moved to L.A. in 1984 to pursue my Theater/Acting career I needed Black and White Headshots.

I contacted an ad in the DRAMA-LOGUE (Acting Industry casting newspaper) for a photographer to take my headshots.

Arthur Roberts was the photographer and I met him at his penthouse in Marina Del Rey for the shoot. Photos came out great.

Arthur Roberts was also the actor portraying the Masked Ninja in REVENGE OF THE NINJA. A lot of us actors back then had "on the side" gigs for extra income.

I remember he was very nice and pleasant. He was a great character actor. This was back in 1984. I wonder if he is still around?

Yes he is, and he looks great! Thanks for the great photos Art!:
