Since I started listening to scores I've never like Beltrami, but just recently and in quick succession, I've been blown away by his scores for THE HURT LOCKER, INTO THE ELECTRIC MIST, MAX PAYNE & KNOWING
In light of this, I decided to re-visit a score that really rubbed me up the wrong way when the film was originally released; THE FACULTY.

Well, how does one react to your sixteen-year-old thoughts? Other than to say you're OLD now - twenty-seven?
Of course, The Faculty will always have a special place in my heart for reasons that have to do with a LOT of money raining down my way, if you get my drift, and if you don't get my drift, perhaps someone here can guess why money was raining down my way and what The Faculty had to do with it.

The Faculty is a nice, solid Beltrami entry. Not his best, but far from his worst.
I can't say the same about the film, which is one of the most obnoxious and dull entries in both Robert Rodriguez's and Bruce Kimmel's oeuvre.

Bruce Kimmel, along with David Wechter, gets sole story by credit on a film entitled The Faculty. Bruce Kimmel and David Wechter wrote the original script for The Faculty. Originally, Miramax (Dimension) bought The Faculty as a vehicle for Kevin Williamson to rewrite and make his directorial debut. At some point, Williamson decided to only rewrite the script, and Rodriguez came on board. I believe that not one line of dialogue is left from the original script, but two character names were retained, although in the original script one of those names was for a female, while in the rewrite the female name (Casey) was given to the Elijah Wood character, which is sort of modeled on what Bruce Kimmel and David Wechter wrote, character-wise. I have it on good authority that Bruce Kimmel but not David Wechter posts on this very board. Can someone please confirm this?

I can only tell you, that pre-Kevin Williamson's odd and total rewrite, it was quite a nifty little script, and much funnier. Ask me if I care? When it's raining money, the answer is a big N and O.
I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for "The Faculty," because I rented the videotape 10 years ago the day after I'd had my vasectomy, and it was a fun distraction from... um... the obvious. (This was in Sonoma, CA, where I'd driven -- gingerly, carefully -- to my local Blockbuster in search of something to watch. My wife was attending the Red and White Ball that night downtown as her own distraction, and I joked when she returned, "Great -- you went to the Red and White Ball, and left me here with Black and Blue Balls.)
Regardless, the film, a Vicodin and a bag of frozen peas made for a more tolerable evening. ;-)
