Just had a nasty case of the hiccups. I was always told that if you hold your breath long enough, they'd go away. Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't (for me at least).

Anyway, I was browsing the net while having hiccups and found this remedy which made them stop alltogether! So of course I wanted to share smile

For overall best results, please try to do the steps as quickly as you can and try very hard not to let any air out.

Step 1: Start by inhaling through your mouth until your lungs feel full (when it feels like you cannot inhale any more.... your lungs will basically stop taking in air).

Step 2: Swallow. You are not really swallowing anything but it seems that without this act, it doesn’t work.

Step 3: Now inhale some more until your lungs feel full again. You may not be able to inhale a lot, but do get some more air in. It will start to get difficult to do this as you go, but keep trying. You obviously can’t suck in as much air as you did initially, but just a little will do (think of it as taking a “sip” of air).

Step 4: Swallow again. This too will start to get difficult as you go.

Step 5: Repeat steps 3 and 4 (inhale and swallow) until you cannot swallow again. While it seems you can almost always suck in just a little more air, it is the swallowing that gets to be impossible. When you feel like you cannot swallow again, swallow again anyway. It will be hard to do, your face will probably turn red, and you may make squeaking sounds. But you CAN swallow one last time. By this time, your lungs should also be quite full and it should be difficult to get much more air in as well. While you should try not to let any air out, if you have really repeated steps 3 and 4 as many times as you can, you probably will end up letting a little out before you can take that last swallow. If you find that air keeps escaping out of your nose even early in the process, try squeezing it shut with your fingers.

Step 6: Exhale.

...or you could just hold your breath and hold your nose for an interval greater than the hiccup.

Simple solution:

Guzzle whiskey until you pass out. When you wake up the next day, the hiccups will be gone. Problem solved. You will probably have a massive headache, but that can be cured by chasing a handful of aspirin with a tall glass of water, which unfortunately may resurrect your hiccups. On the rare occassion when that happens, repeat the process until the hiccups subside.

P.S. Don't try this at home. It usually works better in highly populated public places. Also, be sure to have a friend nearby, to videotape the event and later post it on youtube for posterity.

I've *hic* had them all afternoon. I tried sitting in a hardback chair and stretching *hic* backwards. Then I held my *hic* breath. Then *hic* I held my breath again. That worked, but for only an hour.

When I *hic* got home I looked it up in a book and tried breathing deep*hic*ly, which didn't work, then breathing rapidly into a paper bag. That did*hic*n't work either.

Try this Chi Gong exercise:
1. Immediately after a hiccup, relax and gently breathe in deeply for ~3 seconds, allowing your chest to expand.
2. Now gently over another 3 seconds, push the breath downward as if you’re pushing it into your stomach, which should expand outward and tighten slightly as your chest contracts. It's as if you're trying to make yourself phart.
3. Hold for a second and then gently exhale.
Basically you’re sinking your breath. The idea is to be relaxed as you do it. This seems to stop the spasms of the diaphragm and momentarily gets your mind off the hiccups.
Works for me every time! Good luck!

Guzzle down a full glass of water without stopping...works 90% of the time.

A spoon full of sugar will stop the hiccups. It's worked every time since I was a kid.

I've had them on and off since yesterday. Mostly on.

Often it kicks in after sitting down. Often it dies off after sitting down.

It's *hic* happening now.

I was able to sleep though. I was surprised that I was able to. I listened to an audiobook and really concentrated, then soon dropped off.

I bet your hummingbirds don't have the hiccups. I rest my case. wink
