It's a little like a shakesperean play with the odd interjection of music to add some luminescence between scenes. A film in which language plays such an instrumental part of the overall story can't be saturated with music.

Probably why Delerue worked so hard on the title piece. It was beautifully woven.

However short this score may be (and don't forget the possibility of unused music), I would still love to see it released on CD.

I think it is safe to say that nearly everything DELERUE did do even in simple style is so memorable. He had that touch, But even those who love his music as i, know if there was some flaw for the great composer he was, maybe because he was so prolific, he did repeat himself at times. But so what, for a composer to have done so much great original stuff, it is his right to throw in a few already used notes and chords, that he did use before. The truth is, right till the end Georges gave us new stuff in composition, even with the repeats.Any creative person as we are, know the score[no pun intended there] on our weaker days we may cheat a little, it's all part of the fragile human mind, A innocent cheat, mind you sometimes, in which we ourselves may not notice till we later compare our works.

Was this released?

Yes. It was part of a 6CD Delerue Box Set, and included the original unused version of the Main Title music that Zinnemann asked Delerue to revise.

Here's a piano transcription of the revised film version:

One question: Does the 2xLP contains any more music than what is available on the Universal 6CDs? I don't mind purchasing the LPs, but not if it just dialogues.

I think the LPs are all dialogue.

More than 20 years ago I had the double LP here for a short time, but as far as I remember there are not even 5 minutes of music on those two discs. It was completely disappointing. All of it is dialogue, not even the complete Ouverture which can be heard on the Universal box is there. You have to search and search to find a few short Delerue snippets on this double LP. So if you think you get some Delerue pieces without dialogue on this album, you can forget it. Therefore not worthwhile to buy if you expect a lot of Delerue music.

Thanks. As a collector I might be interested if there is something like 1 or 2 minutes of unreleased Delerue on it (and not just background music), as it is available very cheap in Mint condition, but it is of course not worth the trouble for dialogue.

think i mentioned on another Delerue thread that I have from 1966 a double LP on RCA Victor with all the key speeches from the film interspersed with the incomparable music. Its incomparable-you can still smell the vinyl protection on the paper sleeves which shows how delicately I've played it!

I also compared in another (maybe Delerue) post the majesty (metaphor) of this score with that of his Nobody Runs Forever two years later, regarding the diplomatic world of the main character.

Still red-hot these scores, after 50 years!
