My favorite sitcom. Alan Brady was, and is, my mentor. I wish I had a bald brother-in-law that I could berate mercilessly.
My friend Danny Jacobson was a big fan too. When he was producing MAD ABOUT YOU he had Reiner guest star AS Alan Brady. BRILLIANT!!!
I remember that episode! I used it in my thread, SIX DEGREES OF SITCOM SEPARATION- It goes likes this: Alan Brady appeared on MAD ABOUT YOU Buddy Sorrell from THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW appeared as himself on THE DANNY THOMAS SHOW (MAKE ROOM FOR DADDY) The Danny Williams family introduced Andy Taylor from THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW on an episode of MAKE ROOM FOR DADDY- The Danny Williams family appeared in an episode of THE LUCILLE BALL DESI ARNAZ SHOW; the Ricardo's in turn appeared as them selves on MAKE ROOM FOR DADDY- Lucy Ricardo guest starred on an episode of THE ANN SOTHERN SHOW Ann Sothern appeared as her Suzie MacNamara character from PRIVATE SECRETARY on another hour long LUCILLE BALL-DESI ARNAZ show- Jim Nabors spun off from THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW into GOMER PYLE, USMC
As a result, all these shows exist in the same sitcom universe!
Imagine my parents' surprise when, back in high school, they found out the reason this then-16/17 year old was staying up late every week night was to watch The Dick Van Dyke Show on Nick@Nite. LOL! I happened to discover it one night while channel surfing, and while I had nothing against "old shows" (I remember watching I Love Lucy reruns when I was even younger), I'd never seen one as funny as this. I was constantly laughing out loud. I continued to watch every chance I had for nearly the remainder of the show's run on N@N and never stopped laughing.
I've read that one of the reasons the comedy remains so durable is because, for the most part, the show refrained from topical humor that could easily date it within years, and instead focused on humor derived from the situations. If I had the money I'd pick up the DVDs without hesitation.
Gosh, Ray, I WISH I'd seen that episode. (And I saw a LOT of MAD ABOUT YOUs.) Sounds brilliant, indeed.
Danny also hired George Petrie for MAD ABOUT YOU. He said George would talk endlessly about Jackie Gleason. How I would have loved to have heard THOSE stories!
Does anybody remember the episode where Rob thinks he going bald, dreams that his hair has turned into a head of lettuce, wakes up from the dream, then finds out he's in another dream where he REALLY is bald (and Mel Cooley has HAIR)! Absolutely priceless! I hope this episode comes out on D.V.D.!

It is out on DVD- The entire 5 year run has been available for at least six years, GREAT set, lots of extras, as good as their TWILIGHT ZONE release.
I loved this show. Among my favorites is the episode with Dick and Henry (Sgt. Garcia from Zorro or the Wazir from the OBC of Kismet) Calvin as Laurel and Hardy. Have to love the genius of Carl Reiner in realizing that Van Dyke was better for the lead than he himself would have been.

Calvin played a friend of Rob Petrie's called Pomerantz (his first name I can't remember).
Calvin was in fact one of three actors to play Rob's old Army buddy alternately known as Sol Pomeroy, Sol Pomerantz, Sam Pomerantz (when Calvin did it) and Sam Pomeroy. The first two times it was Marty Ingels, then after Calvin it was Allan Melvin (no consistency there!).
