I'm excited about this film and this score as Audrey Tautou is one of my favorite actresses and Desplat one the best of the newer composers.
I've noticed that Varese has released the score in France and it is available at import prices here in the US. Anyone know if Varese plans a US release?
Have any of our European members seen the film? Any comments of the score?
Good question. I'd like to know if this is going to be released in the US as well. $29 bucks (it's price at SAE) is a little steep for a single commerically released CD (one put out by a US company at that).
I've heard the score only once right after Chéri. I was a bit surprised that I liked Avant Channel score better from the two. It's definitely more variable than Chéri, which is a bit boring and ends exactly just like it starts. I would need to hear the score again to help you more with it. It's nothing that special and won't suprise you if you'd heard at least two Desplat's scores before.
I ordered it from Colosseum when they released it about a month ago. I like it a great deal, but it's only about half an hour long. Lots of great thematic material. It sounds kind of like UPSIDE OF ANGER meets BENJAMIN BUTTON.
It goes well with Cheri. Since both albums are so short and I got them on the same day, I tend to listen to them in a row, they've sort of blurred in my mind.
Odd that he'd have two scores for light romantic melodramas set in 1920s Paris released on the same day.

I found it off Colosseum's store on eBay, which was surprisingly a bit cheaper than their website (and also because it didn't include sales tax.) I combined it with a few other titles, so shipping costs came out pretty even as well.
Didn't much care for this score... but have never enjoyed any of Desplat's music... until I took note of the nearly inaudible soundtrack for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
Why the director lowered its volume is beyond me... but this Desplat effort has become infectious and I can not stop listening to it.... lovely moment after lovely moment... the unique orchestration for the ticking clock of Mr. Gateau.... the harps accompanying the children beneath the table... the sweeping sound terminating in the gorgeous lament of a soprano sax as the clouds part to reveal Paris... and of course the dual piano work of "Benjamin & Daisy". Magic.
I picked up a used copy of this the other week in London (one of those music exchange shops...mint condition) while in town for the 4 Horns/Horner concert and it was the best 2 quid I've spent in ages. It's got some lovely tracks on it. Some remind me of Williams in his Accidental Tourist mode, while others have an Elfman vibe to them. The rest is typical Desplat, ending with a nice variant of his Birth Waltz. While I still tend to find Desplay VERY hit or miss, this is quite lovely indeed.
