EDIT: Or maybe it is true. I have 4 sources that say hes gone and another 4 that says he is "alive and well". Can anyone confirm? His webpage is down as well.

(Sorry for the confusion)

What a week. Slyly humorous in A View to a Kill, with any luck that performance would have prompted some to hunt out his Steed in the event that it had passed them by.

Avengers to me is Steed, Peel, English country lanes, Tara, Bentleys, oddness, style and staying up a bit later than normal bedtime on a school night - not the Marvel grouping (as much as I might enjoy it in a passing sort of way. I doubt I'll tell nostalgic about The Age of Ultron in 40 years' time).

Sad news, Gordon, and condolences to family and friends.

He's been quite ill for some time, I think one of his daughters have been taking care of him, but there you go...it ends. Thanks for those enjoyable hours of telly Patrick.

I lost an umbrella the day before yesterday on a bus.

It made me think of him.

What a ghastly week for the great ones. He was a genuine gent, and well loved.

Man, I am at a loss for words frown This one was my favorite of them all. Two years ago I was lucky to get a personalized autograph from him through his son Rupert who maintains his website. Over the years I collected every book/fanzine/collectible made for the Avengers/New Avengers. When Laurie Johnson released three volumes of music with Avengers material on them I snapped them up fast and listen to them a lot.

He was iconic to me as a teen and without knowing, helped me through some difficult years. When I didn't know I needed a hero...there he was... Dashing, Debonair and able overcome adversity with his brains, no guns, and great partners.

Yeah, I know its just television, but to someone that had nothing to believe in back then (1975 when I discovered Steed/Macnee in the New Avengers) it was a welcome breath of fresh air and maybe a bit of hope that I might overcome the odds too. Patrick Macnee made a difference in this person's life and I was happy to let him know that on his guestbook. A real gentleman with a great sense of humor.

My heart goes out to his family as well as my thanks to him.

Me

That's the way it IS. There are 7 billion people in the world today and they'll ALL go down... rich, poor, good, bad. In 125 years, the world will be exclusively populated with, and run by, strangers. So, as they used to say in hotels, please leave this room as you would expect to find it. smile

That's very pertinent. His brolly was his sword. A true knight who engaged face to face with his enemy.

Ironically, the BBC website says his first 'theatrical' gig was in a school production of Henry V alongside ... Christopher Lee.

Thanks for that, William. I caught it first time around - 20 years ago! I shall be sharing that link. A delightful miniature. Macnee should have done more presenting of that kind. He was very good at it here.

Pity we've nearly lost the TV essay tradition of Betjeman-esque old boys taking us around the isles. Jonathan Meades may well be that last and he's spread pretty thin these days.

Yes 93 is a great age but it's still sad. He was one of a kind. An actor who filled his well loved character to the brim with charm. Infact I can't think of a single hero with anywhere near as much. Ralph Fines in the ill-fated movie was miscast as he was totally devoid of this, and he couldn't wear a bowler well!

Love The Avengers. Love John Steed. Both British greats, as was the actor responsible.

"Tried working once. It didn't work out. Too much like work."

~John Steed in The Murder Market

Anyone interested in The Avengers should read Pat's co-authored book, The Avengers and Me. Wonderful stuff for the Avengers enthusiast.
