So... WHERE IS IT? I've been waiting for this for years! Christopher Franke? eh. Well, I'm pretty sure that Babylon 5 hadn't been such a big success if Copeland and not Franke had scored it.

Love both scores and wish the Copeland score were available, too. Perhaps La La Land could get the rights for another Copeland soundtrack now that they've released DEAD LIKE ME. I wish we could get the original cut of the pilot on DVD, too. From what I've heard, the only official release was the Columbia House version in Canada only.

Here's what you need to do to get this music...get Copeland's solo album "The Rhythmatist" (A&M CD 5084). It's been years since I've seen the original pilot, but I'm like 99 44/100% certain tracks from that album were tracked into the BABYLON 5 pilot.

Anyone at least know where to get the original version of the pilot so we can actually hear this music again?

There are two versions of The Gathering. The original version was a TV movie aired in 1993 on the Prime Time Entertainment Network as a pilot for the series. After a four-year run on PTEN, Babylon 5 moved to Turner Network Television (TNT) for its fifth and final season in 1998. Series creator and executive producer J. Michael Straczynski supervised a special edition of Babylon 5: The Gathering which aired on TNT immediately following the new TV movie, Babylon 5: In the Beginning. Scenes were edited to move at a faster pace, allowing the restoration of 14 minutes of footage adding exposition and character development. Among the notable additions is a prophetic line spoken by Kosh when he first meets Sinclair. Lost in the special edition is a trip through the station's alien sector which some viewers felt looked too much like a zoo. The original music, composed by Stewart Copeland, is also replaced with a score by Christopher Franke, who composed music for the rest of the series. The special edition is included in the Warner Home Video DVD releases Babylon 5: The Gathering/In the Beginning and Babylon 5: The Movie Collection. The original version is available on AOL's In2TV service, Hulu and through the iTunes Store. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gathering_(Babylon_5)

The original pilot movie had music composed by Stewart Copeland. When the show was picked up as a weekly series Copeland was not available, and so Straczynski hired Christopher Franke, of Tangerine Dream fame. Franke stayed on as the composer for all five seasons of B5, and three B5 telefilms. When Straczynski obtained funds to create a new writer's edition of the pilot movie, the original Stewart Copeland score was replaced with a new score by Christopher Franke. http://www.firstones.com/wiki/Babylon_5_(show)

We had planned on having Stewart Copeland do our series music, but he declined, wanting to take the time to tour and try to work on an album. He was not available to us. That said, I am *extremely* happy with Christopher Franke's work, and think it adds immeasurably to the quality of the show. jms http://www.jmsnews.com/msg.aspx?id=1-13393&query=STEWART COPELAND

Hell yes - put me down for this one too! I've held onto my Warner VHS of the original pilot episode purely because of the score. It's the only episode of B5 that I bought! Which one is that? I know there were the Columbia House VHS tapes, but I thought the VHSs that came out individually only included the special edition pilot. If you have a link for a purchasable official copy of the original version, can you post it here? That way at least we know what to look for.
