I'm really only familiar with Baxter's scores by hearing them in the films they belong to.

And that's why they were written first and foremost. Must never be underemphasized.

Having said that, you don't always get a good grasp of a composer's work in a film sometimes, despite the fact that's what it was written for, due to the nature of the sound mixing and music editing in the film. And, sometimes you're so into a film you don't really notice or focus on the music, even as a soundtrack fan. In my case, remembering what I heard some time ago in a film may be a bit vague to me now. I don't own these films so I couldn't watch any of them to refresh my aging memory. smile A soundtrack recording to jolt the synapses and to focus on the music itself, probably would have helped me with my descriptions. They were pretty lean based on what I could remember!

I got my copy yesterday morning...superb job Intrada! I haven't seen GOLIATH since the 60s...might have to track down a DVD somewhere.
Man, that first chord on MASTER OF THE WORLD disc is LOUD!! How about using THAT in your bedside CD alarm clock? LOL

GOLIATH AND THE BARBARIANS is currently available in a widescreen (2:35-1) DVD from the small label Wild East Productions, accompanied by another widescreen Goliath transfer, GOLIATH AND THE VAMPIRES. BARABARIANS is the better looking of the two. Amazon.com sells this DVD as well. The familiar Goliath theme by Baxter was reused in several peplum films released by AIP.

For those with a regionless/codeless/PAL/NTSC DVD player, there is a super Spanish DVD release of "Goliath and the Barbarians"/"El Terror de Los Barbaros" that has BOTH scores -- Baxter's on the English track option, and Innocenzi's on the Spanish language track. You can toggle back and forth between the language tracks to compare the music.

The only drawbacks to the DVD -- it is not anamorphically enhanced for 16:9 TVs -- but it is a fully widescreen print -- and the image looks good when zoomed. And of course your player has to be able to convert PAL to NTSC and be regionless and codeless.

I think it is OOP -- but occasionally copies can be found on Amazon UK/France/Germany. It is on the Grandes Clasicos Del Cine Epico - Warner Bros. Mercury label, No. 89133.

It is a wonderful way to compare and contrast scoring techniques -- which I will leave to you experts!

Update Edit: I've been watching/listening to the DVD -- wanted to note that both language tracks use Innocenzi's main title music -- and immediately after the title fade out Baxter's score kicks in on the English track -- and the Spanish track continues on with the Innocenzi version. This is fun! I've got the DVD and now both scores on CD!

Boy, this music sounds and is superb! Thanks Intrada. Now, has anyone made a list between the new found 20 minutes and the album music to program the score in film order? If so, could you post it here? I can figure out the Overture comes before the Main Title, but that's about it. I can't get my DVDr from the laser to work!
Thanks,
Jhn

And for those who missed out on this CD, you can still purchase the original Innocenzi score for GOLIATH on the Digitmovies label.

So what are the odds of the label re-negotiating the deal and pressing another run?

Will the clear interest in Les Baxter, demonstrated by the quick selling out of this title, lead to a search of the AIP tapes to determine what else is out there?

I'm disappointed that the packaging doesn't contain a jewel case sized repro of the AIP Barbarian album - who wouldn't want that? - but otherwise am very happy that this is out there!

That isn't that easy, after all this was a "limited edition". But I guess some bootleggers will jump on that... frown

I hope so.

This a really delightful cd. Do I hear echos of Herrmann in track 12? This is why I love film music. This cd reintroduced me to Les Baxter.

Btw, John when can I pay you guys for the next Tribute cd? Lord, knows if Charge of the Light Brigade was an LP I'd have worn it out by now.

This was a blind buy, and I have little interest.

I ordered this mainly to add to my Les Baxter collection having not been been a big fan of his Master of the World score. I enjoyed some of the cues from the original soundtrack recording included here, but overall was not too excited by the disc.

However, with little knowledge of or expectations for Goliath and the Barbarians, I must say that this one was worth the purchase price for me. Beyond the fairly routine opening triumphal march, the rest of the score surprised me and in a good way. Here Baxter quite often writes in his Ravel/Rimsky-Korsakov mode with some tracks echoing his superb exotica writing. The sound of the recording is excellent and makes this a great listen. So for me, I consider the title of this set to be Goliath and the Barbarians also including Master of the World.

Ok um, listening to this fantastic release now...disc 1 anyway.
There seems a be a bit of an audio glitch at 2:52 or so of track 16, Drifting Clouds. Anyone else hear it?

That opening triumphal march from GOLIATH AND THE BARBARIANS was reused in several peplum films released by AIP, including GOLIATH AND THE DRAGON, GOLIATH AND THE VAMPIRES, and SAMSON AND THE 7 MIRACLES OF THE WORLD. I don't know if it was used in GOLIATH AND THE SINS OF BABYLON or not.

Odd, no one ever answered my question from four years ago (though one person on Intrada's board confirmed it)...

So here's another. Anyone know who the singer is on Master of the World?

TerraEpon: Funny. I was about to answer this, but, curious about the song you mentioned, went to get my CD of it, and was surprised to find that I had MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE and not MASTER OF THE WORLD. I bought UNIVERSE (Bill Conti) decades ago and probably never gave it a chance, but because it's by Bill Conti, a favorite of mine, will now try to give it more time. Thanks.

Follow-Up: Today (9-25-13) I played my CD of Bill Conti's MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE, and I must say that it remains one of my least favorite soundtracks of his, But I blame the genre of the film and that music probably worked in the movie. But as a purely listening experience away from the movie, it is not up there with scores he wrote for such films as AN UNMARRIED WOMAN, SLOW DANCING IN THE BIG CITY, THE BIG BLUE, and THE RIGHT STUFF (the non-Tchaikovsky-derived cues).

Wasn't that Ms. Darryl Stevens?
