I attended the Oscar nominated animated short film program today and in addition to the 5 nominees were additional films of honorary merit (some of which were better than the final 5.)

Among the honorary merit shorts was one of the most beautiful and haunting short animated films I've ever seen, Marc Craste's VARMINTS.

The film featured a very moving score by Johann Johannsson, a composer I wasn't familiar with. The score was recorded with the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus.

You can read more about the film here:

and see the trailer with the accompanying score here:

I have worked with Johann many times, as orchestral contractor, mostly on CDs. He is a wonderful composer...with a leaning towards minimalism but not afraid of a "good tune"!

Varmints was certainly a great please for the orchestra to work on

Hi Mr. Fitzpatrick,

I saw your name in the credits for the film. I thought the film was absolutely beautiful and loved the score. It's a shame a work like that would never see a commerical CD release because I found it quite good in the ways you described.

Keep up the great work!

I wasn't that impressed with the film -- very well made, but also overlong and heavy handed -- but the score had some really lovely passages; maybe someday if he does a feature, MovieScore Media can pair his Varmints with the feature.

Just saw this short film, I quite liked it. The music was very nice.

Here's a front cover my talented friend Luis Rojas put together for me. I didn't like the official one very much. Well I've seen 2 of his movies (TToE is the other one) today and liked very much both scores. Very talented this mr Johannsson.

I found the CD at a reasonable price through the composer's own website. It said it was "signed and numbered" but it wasn't. I really didn't care. I was just happy to have the CD and at a reasonable price.
