2 entertain have confirmed that the First Doctor story The Keys of Marinus is scheduled to be released on DVD in the first half of 2009. This release is in addition to the stories previously announced.

The Keys of Marinus was William Hartnell's fifth story and was originally shown between 11 April and 16 May 1964. It was written by the Daleks' creator, Terry Nation, and directed by John Gorrie. The Doctor Who restoration team has an article on the making of the DVD including details of previously unknown cuts in the episodes and how this missing material was restored.

The team also have a feature on the upcoming release of the Patrick Troughton 10 part epic, The War Games.

There are 11 DVD release slots scheduled in 2009. The two remaining slots are likely to be filled with a box set consisting of three stories, and a stand alone release.

The current confirmed UK DVD release schedule is as follows:

• 26 Jan 2009 - E-Space Trilogy Box (Full Circle, State of Decay and Warriors' Gate)
• 23 Feb 2009 - The Rescue / The Romans
• 16 Mar 2009 - Attack of the Cybermen

In addition, the following are slated for UK release in 2009, with specific dates yet to be announced: The Keys of Marinus; The War Games; Dalek War box set (Frontier in Space / Planet of the Daleks); The Deadly Assassin; Image of the Fendahl; Delta and the Bannermen

Dalek War box set (Frontier in Space / Planet of the Daleks)

I planned to order this double DVD, starring Jon Pertwee.
Oddly enough, there're so few Doctor Who releases with Jon Pertwee?
Why?

I have never understood the order in which the stories are picked. I for one, am glad that an extra William Hartnell story has been chosen. I would have liked The Sensorites to get a release, but I can settle for The Keys Of Marinus.
As for Pertwee, the one I'm waiting for is The Daemons. The Third Doctor, The Master and UNIT.
What more could you ask for in Doctor Who? Aah yes, the glory days.

Frontier In Space. What a classic. The Draconians. One of the best aliens ever to feature in Doctor Who. I would like to see them make a return in the current series.

I read at Amazon US and UK that the second and expanded edition of a "Doctor Who - Jon Pertwee" companion book will published on May 19, 2009:

About Time 3: The Unauthorized Guide to Doctor Who (Seasons 7 to 11)
by Tat Wood

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0975944673/ref=s9subs_c1_14_at1-rfc_p_si1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-1&pf_rd_r=17A9AN43VNAAP4DS03YV&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=463383351&pf_rd_i=507846

Does a person ever read the first edition of this book?
Thanks to elaborate.

It's also heavily rumoured that we'll be seeing the "Black Guardian" trilogy (Enlightenment, Terminus and Mawdryn Undead) on DVD this year. Since none of the titles announced so far are from the Peter Davison era, the release of these 3 stories seems extremely likely.

There are 17 individual Who stories out this year some singles, some in sets! Woo-Hoo! :-)

As for the order, well they're trying to keep fans of all 7 classic Doctors happy, also they're trying to spread out the "crap" ones so they're not all left until the end.

There's always a crap story from nearly every Doctor. Death To the Daleks anyone? I seem to remember reading how Dudley Simspon used about six musicians for that story.

Specials in HD
PressClipsFebruary 4, 2009 • Posted By Marcus
This months Doctor Who Magazine reveals that the upcoming Doctor Who specials will be filmed in High Definition, a first for the series. Previously the production team has resisted the move to HD, because of the higher costs involved particualy with effects shots. Executive Producer Julie Gardner said the team has been planning the move to HD, for many months. James Strong who is directing Planet of the Dead, has considerable experience working in HD on programmes such as Hustle.

In other news the magazine also reveals that K-9 is due to play a large part in Series Three of The Sarah Jane Adventures. He is likely to appear in around 6 episodes of the 12 part series.

Frontier In Space.
The Third Doctor, The Master and The Draconians. What more could you ask for in a great Doctor Who story. Supposedly, Pertwee's favourite aliens in Doctor Who.

I'd love to see the Draconians make a return to Doctor Who.

Axos merely hastens the process...
Axonite is simply... bait, for human greed.
Because of this greed, Axonite will spread across the planet,

Slowly, we will consume every particle of energy,
every last cell of living matter.
Earth will be sucked dry!"

I'm sure Amazon UK will have it listed soon. No word on what the extras will be. I even checked the Restoration Team site.

On the Region 1 front, there will be two more stories out 7th July.
These are:
The Rescue/The Romans (2 discs).
Attack Of the Cybermen.

1st September three titles are due:
Image Of the Fendhal.
The Deadly Assassin.
Delta And the Bannermen.

I'm guessing The war Games will be out on R1 sometime in November. No word yet on The Keys Of Marinus or the Dalek War Boxset.

DVD sales sites have begun listing release dates for several stories for DVD release in the UK.

The second Doctor swan song, The War Games, is due for release on July 6th. The ten part story, staring Patrick Troughton is released on 3 discs. First shown in 1969, it also features Frazer Hines and Wendy Padbury.
Extras cleared for release at the BBFC website include a feature on the truth behind the War Games, Timezones; a feature on Malcolme Hulke; a 'Now and Then' on the Locations used in the story; a feature on Dudley Simpson; and a look at the Second Doctor in Comic strips.

August 10th sees the release of a box set entitled The Black Guardian Trilogy which contains three stories from the fifth Doctor. Mawdryn Undead, Terminus and Enlightenment were originally broadcast in the winter of 1983. They cover the arrival of Mark Strickson as Turlough and the departure of Sarah Sutton as Nyssa as well as featuring Janet Fielding as Tegan Jovanka.

Listed for release in September are two stories. The first Colin Baker story, The Twin Dilemma is listed for release on September 7th. This is the first conformation that the story will be released this year. It completes the DVD releases for the sixth Doctor. Just two weeks later sees the release of the first Doctor story, The Keys of Marinus.

In addition, a special edition of the 1988 Sylvester McCoy story Remembrance of the Daleks is being issued on July 20th.

The current expected UK DVD release schedule is therefore as follows:

• 22 June 2009 - Delta And The Bannermen
• 6 July 2009 - The War Games
• 20 July 2009 - Remembrance Of The Daleks - Special Edition
• 10 August 2009 - The Black Guardian Trilogy
• 7 September 2009 - The Twin Dilemma
• 21 September 2009 - The Keys of Marinus

The Dalek War box set (Frontier in Space / Planet of the Daleks) is still expected later this year.

All dates are subject to change.

Thanks for the links. I read the extras.

Now, we can expect the "Dalek War" box set in October or November, I guess. The best is for the end of the year!

I'm especially looking forward to The Keys Of Marinus. Hopefully Rememberance Of the Daleks will see a R1 release. It was part of the Davros boxset which hasn't seen the light of day in the U.S.

Found this at dvdtimes.co.uk.

It has finally been officially confirmed that July's release in 2|Entertain's Classic Doctor Who series will be Patrick Troughton's epic last story, The War Games. The ten parter, the second longest single Doctor Who story ever made (discounting Trial of a Time Lord), was first broadcast in Spring 1969 and saw the Second Doctor and his companions Jamie (Frazer Hines) and Zoe (Wendy Padbury) landing on what appears to be Earth during the First World War. The three soon find that all is not as it seems, however, when they find themselves travelling between time zones, each of which is based around a different war during Earth's history. Who is controlling the time zones, and to what purpose, and can the time travellers survive long enough to get to the centre of the web? Co-written by Malcolm Hulke and Terrance Dicks, the story is famous not only as Troughton's final adventure but also as the story which finally revealed where the Doctor came from, and introduced us to his people the Time Lords, and is a more than welcome addition to the range.

Details of the three disc set, due for release on 6th July, are outlined by Steve Roberts on the Restoration Team's website as follows:

Commentary, with contributions from actors Frazer Hines, Wendy Padbury, Philip Madoc, Jane Sherwin and Graham Weston, co-writer Terrance Dicks and script editor Derrick Sherwin.

War Zone (dur. 36' 23") - cast and crew recall the making of Patrick Troughton's epic swansong. With actors Frazer Hines, Wendy Padbury, Bernard Horsfall, Jane Sherwin and Graham Weston, director David Maloney, producer Derrick Sherwin, co-writer Terrance Dicks, designer Roger Cheveley, Doctor Who Magazine editor Tom Spilsbury , new series writers Paul Cornell, James Moran and Joseph Lidster. Narrated by Gerard Murphy.

Shades of Grey (dur. 21' 45") - just how did the technical and artistic constraints of monochrome television conspire to effect the unique look and feel of early productions? With actors Frazer Hines, Wendy Padbury and Jane Sherwin, script editors Terrance Dicks and Derrick Sherwin, director Timothy Combe, production designer Roger Cheveley, graphic designer Bernard Lodge and sound designer Brian Hodgson. Narrated by Gerard Murphy.

Now and Then (dur. 9' 35") - the ongoing series visits the locations of 'The War Games' forty years on…

The Doctor's Composer (dur. 17'32") - prolific composer Dudley Simpson looks back at his first five years of work on Doctor Who.

Sylvia James - In Conversation (dur. 8' 27") - make-up designer Sylvia James talks about her work on Patrick Troughton's Doctor Who stories.

Talking About Regeneration (dur. 24' 12") - the concept of regenerating a show's main character into an entirely new physical form proved to be both a lifesaver for the show and an increasingly important part of its mythos. This feature explores the ideas involved and takes a closer look at each of the Doctor's regenerations. With actors Peter Davison and Kate O'Mara, writers Rob Shearman, Joseph Lidster and Gareth Roberts.

Time Zones (dur. 15' 21") - historians discuss the reality behind the various time zones featured in 'The War Games'. With political historian Dr. Martin Farr, military historian Crispin Swayne, Newcastle University's Lindsay Allison-Jones and author Prof. Susan-Mary Grant.

Stripped for Action - The Second Doctor (dur. 13' 46") - the continuing series of features focussing on the Doctor's comic strip adventures looks at the Second Doctor. With former Doctor Who Magazine editors Alan Barnes and Gary Russell, comics historians Jeremy Bentham and John Ainsworth.

On Target - Malcolm Hulke (dur. 20' 00") - the first in a series of features on the Target range of TV story novelizations looks at the work of writer Malcolm Hulke. With authors Terrance Dicks, Gary Russell and David J Howe, artist Chris Achilleos.

Devious (dur. 12' 15") - for over a decade, a group of friends on England's south coast met on weekends to shoot an amateur Doctor Who film - 'Devious' - which takes place between the events of Patrick Troughton's swansong 'The War Games' and Jon Pertwee's introduction in 'Spearhead from Space', and features their own previously unknown incarnation of the Doctor. To segue back into 'Spearhead', the team decided to put up the money to employ Jon Pertwee for a day… in what was to become his last ever appearance as the Third Doctor. This feature also has a commentary from the production team.

As well as the usual Photo Gallery, Subtitle Production Notes, PDF material, Coming Soon trailer and Easter Eggs including a somewhat different take on 'The Trial of Doctor Who'. For more information on the release, check out the Restoration Team's website.

In addition, online retailers are starting to list The Guardian Trilogy (starring Peter Davison) on August 10th, The Twin Dilemma, Colin Baker's infamous debut as the Sixth Doctor, on September 7th and the William Hartnell six parter The Keys of Marinus on 21st September, as well as an individual release for the Special Edition of Remembrance of the Daleks, previously only available as part of the Davros Box Set, on 20th August.
