Sadly, I just read that one of Disney’s original TV Mouseketeers, “Cheryl” Lynn Phelps Holdridge, has died (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28578029/) and my mind went back many years to a much more innocent time. If you are of a certain age or perhaps even younger over the years, beats there a heart on the FSM Board that was not saddened, perhaps even traumatized upon viewing Disney’s 1957 film, “Old Yeller”? The film is often mentioned in other films or TV series and remains one of Disney’s misty-eyed classics. The story of a boy and his dog stars Fess Parker, Dorothy McGuire, Tommy Kirk, Kevin Corcoran and Chuck Connors. There was actually a sequel, “Savage Sam” in 1963. Was “Old Yeller” ever released in Europe?

The score is by one of Disney’s top composers, Oliver Wallace (1887-1963) and was made available in part (along with some dialogue) on several Disney LP pressings, the original of which is printed below (Disneyland WDL-3024 {mono}).

Old Yeller is a great film and that theme song is so damn catchy, best dog on dog in the west... I do think a score release would be cool.

drivingmissdaisy - I think your post is trying to quote the lyric of the title song - you've got "best dog on dog in the west". Too sexual for Disney.
the actual lyric is best dog gone dog in the west.

"Old Yeller" was certainly released in the UK Mike, and it was just as big a hit here as it was in the States.
I somehow managed to miss it first time around, and didn't catch up with it 'til a later re-issue.
It did, of course, become a firm favourite with me, and a copy of it sits on my DVD shelves, along with "Savage Sam".

Do you remember that episode of "Friends"....the one where Phoebe is watching it on TV, and thinks it has a happy ending?
It turns out that her Mom always switched it off - before they got to the real ending!

Ahhhhhhh!! smile

Just wanted to bump this as apparently there's another Disney title coming from Intrada after this upcoming 3CD set - just wondering if any Oliver Wallace tunes such as this, and The Incredible Journey might be potentials too.

A Wallace twofer of Old Yeller with the sequel score Savage Sam would be neat. I'm still waiting for Intrada to dip into the 50s and 60s live action Disney features. What I long for most of all is Wallace's Darby O'Gill and the Little People, which was probably my single favorite film growing up.

Old Yeller, Swiss Family Robinson, the original Parent Trap or Absent-Minded Professor...any Disney score from the 1940s to the mid-1960s would be an automatic purchase for me.

Y'know what would be awesome...if Intrada did Disney composer-themed sets similar to how they did their recent amazing Waxman collection from the Rhino vaults.

Disney is obviously going to hold onto most of their animated scores from that period, and release what exists in their Legacy Collection...they might let out some minor animated things like Ichabod or Ben & Me, that sort of thing, but for the most part I bet only live action Disney from that era would be available to Intrada. And for better or worse, a lot of that live action Disney from the 50s and 60s is pretty obscure stuff now, with the occasional exception like Treasure Island, Old Yeller, Swiss Family Robinson, Darby O'Gill, 20,000 Leagues, Davy Crockett, etc. I mean, just look at this list someone made:
http://www.imdb.com/list/ls077114097/

So much stuff there I've never heard of, but the scores by Oliver Wallace, George Bruns, Clifton Parker, Paul J. Smith, William Alwyn, etc. could be just wonderful on the most obscure things.

So how about a 4 disc set of Oliver Wallace, with Old Yeller and its sequel on one disc, and the rest filled with other stuff like Darby O'Gill? Probably the best way to get this stuff out IMO. Same goes for George Bruns, with one of the discs for example devoted to his Absent-Minded Professor and its sequel Son of Flubber. Intrada already released Smith's 20,000 Leagues, but how about a four disc set collecting his other great work for the studio?

I would be all over a box set of Clifton Parker scores for the studio: Treasure Island, Robin Hood, and The Sword and the Rose. (Actually, did he do a fourth score for Disney? I seem to remember the liner notes from the Chandos Parker album mentioning four.)

How about a William Alwyn threefer with not only the justly-famous Swiss Family Robinson (1960) but also In Search of the Castaways (1962) and the more obscure Third Man on the Mountain (1959)...actually that last one might only be obscure to me, as it's the single highest-rated live action Disney film of the 1950s according to that IMDb list.

A logical twofer with Cedric Thorpe Davie's scores to Rob Roy (1953) and Kidnapped (1960) would also be ace!

I like your idea Yavar, and I would pick those sets up in an instant.

I'd also settle for a dog-gone collection:

Shaggy Dog
Old Yeller
Incredible Journey

and

*cough*ahem*wink*

Fluppy Dogs. smile

Sign me up for the dog gone set, Ryan. smile

Alternatively, a two or three disc set devoted to everything Shirley Walker wrote for the studio. John Takis laid out some great items besides FLUPPY DOGS on the Intrada forum, and Roger seemed interested:

"Walker's music for Disney's 1997 LOVE BUG reboot, starring Bruce "The Chin" Campbell (not to be confused with the 2005 Linsay Lohan film) is one of my favorite unreleased scores of the nineties. The theme for the villainous car is just spectacular, especially churning out in the low brass during the final race scenes.

As for MYSTERIOUS ISLAND, a single track has been officially released on various Tokyo DisneySea albums. But Walker actually wrote a good deal of material for the various sections of the theme park attraction -- I don't know the exact figure, but it may be as much as 30 or 40 minutes, by some accounts. What I've heard is amazingly powerful stuff, as you'd expect given the composer and subject matter."

Hope that most of this old stuff still survives comes from this post by Doug Fake:
"As we have mentioned on numerous occasions, our shopping list with Disney is endless, including countless scores from their 1970's - 1990's vaults, scores from their recent catalog, select animation titles, vintage scores (Paul Smith, Oliver Wallace, etc.), Ron Goodwin comedies, the Touchstone library, Hollywood Pictures, etc. And that's just with Disney. There are hordes of soundtracks from other film and TV studios still worthy of release. As it is we have new Disney music out every month, as well as something from one of the other studios. And for every month that we bring more Disney music out, we get further requests for things that haven't been released yet. It's the nature of collectors, of course. We have our own want lists, too, and sometimes we want to focus on that. I can't say we'll be around long enough to hit everybody's holy grails... but I'm also pretty sure none of you will be around long enough to see every single one of them happen either."
