Has Bernstein's music for Michael Jackson's "Thriller" ever been released, in any capacity? It's obviously not enough to warrant it's own CD, but could it have been part of a compilation of some sorts?
For what it's worth, I have not seen nor heard of any of Elmer Bernstein's "scary music" from Michael Jackson's THRILLER being released anywhere. And I have looked.
You mean Michael Jackson didn't compose the music to that video? Or was there an actual movie, not just the longggg music video?
The beginning of the music video actually has them inside a movie theater, watching a movie starring Jackson in which he turns into a werewolf (though you don't know it's just a movie until it cuts to a shot of the theater). At the end of the video Bernstein is credited for writing the "scary music" for the movie portion. It's not much, I wouldn't surprised if he only recorded about 10 minutes of music, but it would be cool to have.
It is released on Silva Screens THE ESSENTIAL ELMER BERNSTIEN FILM MUSIC COLLECTION CD the track Metamorphosis is a rejected track from an American Werewolf and was then used in Michael Jackson's Thriller video.
I remember discussing this in another thread last year. Try a 'search' for AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON. I seem to recall that the track on the Silva Bernstein complilation was mislabelled as AWIL when it was indeed THRILLER. I don't think it was rejested from AWIL as the timings don't match.

I read somewhere that it indeed was a rejected piece to the tranformation scene in A.W.I.L but Landis instead used the BLue Moon song to make it more "funny" than what it would have been with bernsteins score... Sad, but I love the movie anyway and its one of few movies that gets better and better with the years for me...A great movie with great music...
Sorry to bump this old thread, but the track in question from the Bernstein Film Music compilation is NOT the music used in Thriller! I just listened to it.

Indeed. It's similar, but not the actual track. I wonder whether they reused the rejected piece (or used an alternate version) for the music video or re-recorded it w/ some revisions?
