I am not a big Danny Elfman fan but this is special, very unique. The film is very straight forward filmmaking but the subject matter and performances are powerful. Along with BENJAMIN BUTTON, a shoo-in for best score nomination.

Score worked great in the film, but mostly short cues without much development made it an unexceptional album presentation with a few excellent moments. Great film, though. Probably Van Sant’s best.

Loved the film and the music.

But I wonder if the score may be deemed ineligible by the Academy because of the large number of Seventies pop songs.

I love this score. It's so effortlessly (at least it sounds that way) good, and pleasant and uplifting, what more can you ask for?

I was afraid someone would bring that up. Do you think the songs detract from the impact of the score, or compliment it? This is one score that I really want to see nominated, so I'm hoping the Academy doesn't rule it out because of the songs.

He's busy staring at a picture of the immortal Guy Farley!

Never heard about the Academy doing anything like that. If they had, FORREST GUMP wouldn't have had a chance.

The songs have nothing to do with the process. They might turn the attention away from the score, but they can't make it ineligible. The only problem is when Academy can't differenciate pre-existing music from original score. (insert Babel insult here)

I believe that THE AVIATOR was deemed inelligable on those grounds.

The track GIVE EM HOPE is just one sublimely beautiful track.
It epitomises what I love about Danny Elfman and his music.
I love him in this mode (similar to stuff in Civil Action and Promised Land).

Saw the movie back on initial release and loved the score but for some reason never bought the album. Anyway, just bought the 16 bit FLAC download and what a beautiful score this is. One of Elfman's best in my opinion.....

It was indeed nominated and in my opinion should have won. A.R. was the TOP Rahman for that year and won for his score for SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, and that's my final answer. Also nominated was Desplat for BENJIMAN BUTTON and two others I can't think of now or weren't that memorable. Oh yes one other was DEFIANCE by James Newton Howard.

I love Danny's superb music for this superb film.
