A Batman forum I belong to reports that Neal Hefti, who composed the show's memorable theme as well as another well-known theme "The Odd Couple" died Saturday at age 86.

RIP, Neal.

GASP! That sucks. The Odd Couple is one of the great themes of all time. *sigh* It's cool that FSM released HOW TO MURDER YOUR WIFE this year.

Fittingly, I've been humming Hefti's "Odd Couple" theme all day.

I regret to say I hadn't realized that Hefti had been alive until this weekend. He was truly a unique voice in film and television music, and I'm sorry to hear of his loss.

The age of 85 (he would have celebrated his 86th birthday in just two weeks) is a good innings. However, it's still a blow when someone whose work has brought a smile to your face passes away. I'm only familiar with Mr. Hefti's work via the MGM Treasury Collection box set, but that small sampling of Hefti's output has left a deep impression on me. I am particularly fond of his score for How to Murder Your Wife.

From what I've read in the message board posting linked to at the top of this thread, Mr. Hefti was a very approachable human being who always had time for others. He may not have enjoyed the popularity of some of his peers, but he was just as talented as any of them. Someone on that other message board compared his melodic gifts to those of Henry Mancini (perhaps one of the greatest melodists in the history of film music), and after listening to some of his work I can believe it.

Of course, I offer my condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Mr. Neil Hefti. He will be missed terribly, but the legacy he has left through his music will remain.

My love for Mr. Hefti and his music is well known around these parts. But what a grand run he had and what music he left. I think I'll play my personal favorite Hefti score - Barefoot In The Park, for me one of the greatest light romantic comedy scores ever written.

I didn't know he died. I didn't even know he was still alive.

I really love his HOW TO MURDER YOUR WIFE score...and his BATMAN theme is quite catchy, which is like saying that water is wet, but still, everyone knows it.

He will be missed.

This seems to be THE year for passing composers who created memorable themes that have been with us for decades. I'm just now discovering the genius of Earle Hagen only a matter of weeks after his death...

Wow! Considering he didn't do that many scores the number that come off the top of my head shows his uniqueness. HOW TO MURDER YOUR WIFE, BOEING BOEING, DUEL AT DIABLO, BAREFOOT IN THE PARK, SYNANON, THE ODD COUPLE, LORD LOVE A DUCK, HARLOW and who can forget OH DAD, POOR DAD, MAMA'S HUNG YOU IN THE CLOSET AND I'M FEELING SO SAD (with a title song that uses the whole title). A voice that stood out from the others.

Me too. Sad news indeed.

Boy, sad to hear this. But listen to what he left us.

I'm going to listen to DUEL AT DIABLO in his memory- what a great theme and score.

I just saw my covers, I was going to be sending them tomorrow, glad I waited a little bit. Very sad news though about Neal. Also sad news, if I would have sent them last week, DARN IT.

Batman lost an icon saturday.

I was listening to his 2 scores in the MGM Box on Saturday oddly enough. Sad news indeed. One of my favorite discs in the box.

The Odd Couple and Batman like other iconic tv show themes will live forever. I would expect every community theater group that does The Odd Couple either uses or is tempted to use the theme.

What a shame that the DOT lp of ODD COUPLE is suspended in a sort of Corporate stasis into perpetuity. Ditto BAREFOOT. Some of us have access to the lps, and can burn copies, but it would be grand to see official cd issues.

Doesn't Universal Music Group own the Dot catalogue? If so, it might be one for Intrada.

One of my favorite western scores is Duel At Diablo. May he rest in peace.

Terribly sad news for me, too. After BATMAN I became a big fan of his with good reason. Most of the music he wrote was issued on lp. He will be missed.

I add my condolences to family and friends.

Hefti's music was always fun and enjoyable.

His BATMAN and ODD COUPLE cherished classics.

A truly talented maestro of the 60's.

I wish I could see that Oh Dad Poor Dad flick. I remember reading about it and thinking it would be a kick.
