Not to promote a bootleg recording, mind you, but I just bought -- er, heard -- the 78 min. unauthorized CD of FIRST KNIGHT. It mystifies me that the original, commercially-available CD release could've omitted much of the best music -- mainly the thrilling Lancelot cues -- in favor of endlessly repeating the stately, Elgarian Arthur theme.

The film, itself, of course, is unwatchable, the work of incompetents (someone must've had a bowel movement in the middle of the night, mistook it for an idea, and jotted "Sean Connery as King Arthur, hmmm..." on a notepad on the nightstand. That was the LAST thing even resembling an idea associated with this ilm. But GOLDSMITH'S SCORE! Surely one of his post-"Star Trek" masterpieces (it's still no "Ivanhoe," but, then, what is?). $22 well spent -- oops!

I agree with you 100% about the gorgeous bootleg and the awful movie!

I, for one, enjoyed the movie very much and plan to get the DVD soon. I thought Goldsmith's rousing score complimented the film very nicely. And of course, King Arthur seems to be a role Connery was born to play. Sure, Richard Gere is no Englishman, but at least he doesn't attempt an accent.

I don't have this (yet), but I have three tracks from the boot, and they sound very fine to me. One thing I noticed though, when I saw to short excerpts of the movie (I never bothered to watch the whole thing): Goldsmith "hornered" a complete motif from Mahler's 2nd symphony, and I think it is used as an actual theme throughout the score - but it appears nowhere on the official album! Coincidence? Or did Goldsmith want to "hide" it?

HA! I love that phrase! Do you mind if I use that someday http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/wink.gif">

Funny, FIRST KNIGHT was just on HBO tonight. Coincidence? I too love the score, but the album leaves something to be desired. This score is probably one of his best and it's a shame so much is left off. Perhaps there will be a DELUXE EDITION someday(I doubt it, but who knows. ALIENS got the treatment, didn't it?)

The hope for such a treatment is not a futile one. Jerry has remarked that this score is a favorite of his as well. If there was ever a Goldsmith score that we could *expect* to have more of someday soon, I think that it would be FIRST KNIGHT. [After all, Jerry's gotta rush to beat all the bootleggers to the punch! http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/smile.gif">]

No problem, you can horner it if you like. http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/wink.gif">

First Knight is a wonderful score, though I hope that the complete thing is a bit better balanced - from what I remember, the album feels a bit too heavy on the action music, though I have to admit that it's been some time since I played it.

Anyway, it's one of the few Goldsmith scores which isn't only structurally similar to my obsession Anton Bruckner (many of his scores are), but has also a brief section that SOUNDS like Bruckner (in the finale).

I think the best part of that 2 disc bootleg is the short percussion track where, at the end, the player says, "You bet your ASS!" Makes me laugh every time!

LOVE "Hornered"! An adjective that belongs right up there -- or, more appropriately down there -- with juicy terms like "Quisling" (if you know anything about World War II, you get my implication).

Just a bit of a follow-up on my original comments on "First Knight": the bootleg has sound nearly indistinguishable from -- and as luscious as -- the licensed CD. I suppose Goldsmith, who keeps a tight lid on the releases of his music, decided to let only 40 mins see the light of day (then why 70 mins+ of "Supergirl," in which we get the same main theme over, and over, and over??).

First Knight was a horribly poor movie, it was just plain bad. Goldsmith's rousing score is another matter, though, it was excellent (and easily the best part of the movie). I think the CD release could use a few extra tracks myself, though I can't pinpoint which, since I'm not going to watch this movie again sober.

Wow! Daniel 2.2, what were you saying, again?
The Omen sounds dated? (?????? This score really should be expanded, best cue is the one when the Thorns ride to curch for something and Damien looses his mind and attacks his mother)
First Knight's choir doesn't sound like Orff at all, but that could be a matter of listening too shallow.

I love the score, for all it's aspects. And untill I get the chance to hear the bootleg CD I can't agree with Orinalthinkr that it was neccesary to get more music from the film. I find the orinial album quite suiting.
(But the completist side of my does agree!)

In my opinion, anyone who admits to not liking Goldsmith's scores for THE OMEN and FIRST KNIGHT,has a damn cheek to ever consider themselves a Goldsmith fan.

THE OMEN trilogy is a classic masterpiece,It was then,it is now and will continue to be so in the future.
As for FIRST KNIGHT,it's the kind of music that is much loved from Goldsmith and is really appreciated by any TRUE Goldsmith fan!

Dean.

Good people... can't you see that DANIEL2's favourite sport is to piss off Jerry Goldsmith's appreciators? And the more you guys try to argue with him, the more he laughs at you!

I mean, how can someone with a working brain despise FIRST KNIGHT or even THE OMEN?

Nonsense!

A pox on the scurvy knave who invented Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V functions.

If 2.2 seriously believes that "FIRST KNIGHT was one of the lousiest movies made during the '90s", then he's never seen TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES 2, BEVERLY HILLS COP 3, LADYBUGS, FATHER OF THE BRIDE, MY GIRL, POLICE ACADEMY 7, THE STENDHAL SYNDROME, SAVING GRACE, BATTLEFIELD EARTH, THE ACID HOUSE, VELVET GOLDMINE, SCHRAMM, BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT, PROBLEM CHILD 2, THE PILLOW BOOK, DRACULA: DEAD AND LOVING IT, JADE, HIDEAWAY, BEYOND BEDLAM, CURLY SUE, PROSPERO'S BOOKS, SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY, THE DARK BACKWARD, DYING YOUNG, A GOOD MAN IN AFRICA, GUARDING TESS, STOP! OR MY MOM WILL SHOOT, SOLAR CRISIS, HUSBANDS AND WIVES, DEATH MACHINE or ABRAXAS: GUARDIAN OF THE UNIVERSE.

This guy is worse than the Energizer Bunny. To those who are comparatively new to this message board, whatever Daniel 2's written up there (I didn't give it more than a scrolling look), he has written it many times before in the last few years at this board. May I try to sum it up as follows for those who don't have the time to read the entire thing:

Jerry Goldsmith blahblah blahblah blahblahblahblah blahblah blahblahblahblah blahblahblahblah blahblahblahblah lame blahblah blahblah clumsy blahblahblahblahblahb disappointing lahblahblah pathetic blahblahblahblah trite blahblah . Whereas James Horner on the other hand blahblah blahblah genius blahblahblahblah blahblah godlike blahblahblahblah next to Mozart blahblahblahblah blahblahblahblah blahblah blahblah cerebral blahblahblahbinspired lahb heavenly lahblahblahblah blahblahblahblahblahblah. And Hans Zimmer of course blahblah blahblah dynamic blahblahblahblah blahblah blahblahblahblah blahblahblahblah contemporary blahblahblahblah modern blahblah blahblah blahblahblah forward looking blahblahblahblahblah blahblahblahblahblahblah CMS! CMS! CMS!!!

daniel 2.2 you have way too much time on your hands. maybe if you would find some park to hang out in. or maybe find you a friend, other than your right hand. Daniel 2.2 you are just a few sandwiches short of a picnic.

Oh back to the subject. I never owned First Knight until, you guessed it girls, last night, it was given to me, and it is pretty good so far, but let me crackdown on the Silva's redentions. They are awful, The City of Prague once again, fails flat. I must always remember, THE ORIGINALS.
