I was wondering if Dudley's scores still exist at the BBC? I would like to see a release of his Blakes 7 music.
Apparently not in the case of Doctor Who - which is why there are no isolated scores of his music on the DVDs and why all the CDs containing his music have been re-recordings.
Not sure about Blake's 7... presumably lost as well?
The tragic part of the story, even more so than Dudley being taken off the job, is the fact that the BBC destroyed all of the original music tapes of his scores for Doctor Who. Apparently they thought the music alone would never be of interest to anyone! Years after his Dr Who days, Dudley himself requested copies of his old music from the BBC and was notified of this sad fact. The good news is, Mark Ayres of the DW Restoration Team has announced that some of Dudley scores for Dr Who have been recovered, and may one day see the light of day in the form of a CD Release. That's all he can tell us at the moment, but I sincerely hope that we will have the privilege of hearing it soon...
It's not so strange that they destroyed some music tapes, when they actually destroyed a whole bunch of ACTUAL EPISODES TOO!
Other highlights of Whovention: Gold (organised by the Doctor Who Club of Australia) included Louise Jameson describing her complex relationship with Tom Baker; Camille Coduri recalling her shock of first learning about Christopher Eccleston's departure as the Ninth Doctor via the media and original series composer Dudley Simpson announcing that there will be orchestral concerts of some of his Doctor Who scores in the United Kingdom in the near future. Rob Lloyd also performed his popular stage show “Who, Me” in Sydney for the first time for a one-off performance on the Saturday night.
