Jim, that CBS special presentation logo was a chop-upped bit of Morton Stevens' main title theme from the busted pilot, CALL TO DANGER, which, for some reason, ended up on the HAWAII 5-O soundtrack album. (I guess it was a favortie of Stevens.)

Since Stevens in the 70's was director of music for CBS, he managed to get some of his themes in where he could. In the 1973 made-for-tv film, FACE OF FEAR, star Ricardo Montalban follows Elizabeth Ashley into a hotel lobby and the muzak playing in the background is a version of his "CBS Movie" theme.

It was the other way around, since the "Hawaii Five O" album came out in '69, and that scoring for the "Special Presentations" was first used in the early '70s, and was suggested by Stevens, who was C.B.S.' West Coast Music Director at the time.

The beginning reminds me of the main title sequence to "Checkmate".

Indeed! As a child I found the "Checkmate" sequence scary.

Bumped because the Mark VII production logo will forever terrify me.
