I don't think the topic has been discussed before : last year, Kenji Kawai gave a live concert named "Cinema Symphony" compiling his work for Japanese movies.

Now the DVD of this concert is out for all the fans of the man's work, and I have just received it. So far, I've only checked the tracks I'm most acquainted with, Avalon & Innocence, but, wow! the performance is simply amazing.

The stage holds a full symphony orchestra, choirs, keyboardists, and of course Kawai who switches from one instrument to another (guitar, keyboard, percussion) according to the track. There are also special guests on some pieces, like the original Polish opera singer for "Voyage to Avalon".

The playing is very faithful to the originals, and the sound will shake your walls. From what I've seen, I was particularly blown away by the Innocence track which combine the main title and the 10+ minutes action piece at the end of the movie : I just wouldn't have deemed possible a live performance of this, but the result is gripping beyond all expectations, and the singers and the completely possessed percussionist make it happen !

For reference, the Japanese 2-disc set is NTSC region 2, with PCM 2.0 and DTS 5.1 sound, and can be purchased on Asian-import stores like CDJapan.co.jp, yesasia.com or arksquare.net

Has anyone else viewed this DVD ?

For Kenji Kawai fans, a 15 minutes walk & chat with the composer in his home town and then in his studio (with english subtitles to activate) :

I put this on this old thread because you will see clips from the 2007 concert in this show.

What a lovely interview, even if it barely touches on his actual scoring work aside from his great Ghost in the Shell.
