Happy 79th Birthday to Max von Sydow, one of the greatest actors of our time. He once again astonished me in the new Julian Schnabel movie.

All the best to you, Sir!

I definitley agree Scorechaser. They don't have actors like Max anymore, a class act indeed!

"You pitiful fool! My life is not your to give...or take!"

"Klytus, I'm borrred. What plaything can you offer me today?"

"Pathetic earthlings. Hurling your bodies out into the void, without the slightest inkling of who or what is out here. If you had known anything about the true nature of the universe, anything at all, you would've hidden from it in terror."

Best. Ming. Ever.

Wow, Ming and Christ. Now that's a career.

He is one of my all time favorites. And when they were still casting The Lord of the Rings movies, I hoped beyond hope that he would play Gandalf. Ever since I read those books I saw him as the Grey Wizard. But that is not taking anything away from Ian McKellan, who is ALSO one of my favorite actors too! big grin

Happy Birthday Max!

Tom

Loved him as Frederick in Woody's Hannah & Her Sisters:

"You missed a very dull TV show on Auschwitz. More gruesome film clips, and more puzzled intellectuals declaring their mystification over the systematic murder of millions. The reason they can never answer the question 'How could it possibly happen?' is that it's the wrong question. Given what people are, the question is "Why doesn't it happen more often?" You see the whole culture. Nazis, deodorant salesmen, wrestlers, beauty contests, a talk show. Can you imagine the level of a mind that watches wrestling? But the worst are the fundamentalist preachers. Third-rate con men telling the poor suckers that watch them that they speak with Jesus, and to please send in money. Money, money, money! If Jesus came back and saw what's going on in his name, he'd never stop throwing up."

Thanks to the poster who suggested that Max von Sydow could have played Gandalf. That is such a perfect idea! (Fortunately McKellan is fantastic in the role, so no bemoaning that it didn't happen from me.)

Wow, yeah, that was a great idea! I could definitely see that.

Von Sydow is a marvelous actor. I love his Bergman stuff, in particular, and my favourite role is as Pelle's father in the fantastic Swedish-Danish film PELLE THE CONQUEROR.

I enjoy him as the exorcist in "The Exorcist" and as the devil in "Needful Things"! smile

His short role in Citizen X, as small a part it is, was such a stunning scene in that movie. When he starts reading out loud his notes, I remember the impact still after watching it in the theatre many years ago.

The only movies I can ever recall him being in were Victory, Dreamscape and Minority Report, and his acting in those left a lasting impression. I could swear he's been in hundreds of films, yet I can't think of any others.

After checking IMDB, it would seem he's been in a ton of films, the majority of which I've never seen. I have Conan the Barbarian, Ice Pirates, and Awakenings on DVD, but I don't remember him being in them.

A great actor with a captivating on-screen presence. Born in 1929... Hard to believe anyone from that time is still alive. Definitely deserves a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

I had forgotten about his role in Victory, a great movie and interesting cast.

From the Under-Rated Directors Offering:

And, our favorite, THE archetypal 70s paranoia-conspiracy masterwork (which is, if possible, even more presciently pertinent now than then)

It boasts a wonderfully-wrought script from Pollack’s usual collaborator, David Rayfiel, highwater performances from Robert Redford (he should’ve been nominated for this, not THE STING), Cliff Robertson, a deft quasi-comedic turn from a surprisingly versatile Faye Dunaway and, bar none, Max Von Sydow’s most magnetic American stint as a European assassin

that HAS to be the ancestral prototype

for The Equalizer’s Robert McCall ...

Today .....

I sat in a recording studio ...

reading a VO,

on the same stool ....

that Max von Sydow sat on two weeks ago ...

He was recording ADR.

It needed telling.
