My brief return to regular comic reading began in 1997, where I caught the excellent run of Batman by Doug Moench, Kelley Jones, and John Beatty. I loved the "ugly", Expressionist look of the art and I agreed wholeheartedly with a letterhack who predicted that their run would be remembered in the same breath as Len Wein-Bernie Wrightson's Swamp Thing. It may never reach those heights, but the Moench-Jones-Beatty Batman stands tall in my memory. I think it's a "Love it or Hate it" proposition, however. In preparation for the "Batman vs. Superman" onslaught/hit/debacle/etc., I've dragged out my copy of Frank Miller's forever-changing of the Batman mythos, The Dark Knight Returns. I haven't read the thing since the first Batman film's release in 1989, but in flipping through it, so much of it is still remarkably fresh in my mind. I rarely see actual kids in comic stores unless they're shackled to their comic-buying parental units and whining to go home. Sure, the kids might look at the toys but books? fuhgettaboutit...I don't understand how children can text constantly--the phone never leaves their hand--yet at the same time show no interest in reading comics or books in general.
