My latest score analysis is on this film. It's kind of a tough listen at times, to be sure, but eventually some really beautiful textures surface out of the darkness. It's a score which I think is ultimately rewarding, but takes some fortitude. The pizzicato tracks are pretty fun though, and "Oil" is just gorgeous IMHO. As others have mentioned, lots of Bartok in some places of the score. Also, I believe there's no synth, but there is ondes martinot, kind of a theremin with keys.
