After many online searches over the past few years finally managed to track down a Red Seal copy of Star Wars/Close Encounters CD via Discogs for £28. A bit more than I wanted to pay but I guess it's rather rare now.

Was a bit dubious whether it would sound that much better than the later Dolby Surround version, but am happy to say its an obvious improvement. That 'distant' sound and harshness have gone, and it's an incredibly vivid and exciting listen. The midrange is fleshed out too unlike the thinner sounding later release. Very pleased indeed - well worth hunting down if you have the patience. Surprising sound quality in fact from such an early CD. Sounds better than the Arista Anthology set in fact, and that's my usual goto set.

Superb! And what an amazing performance by Gerhardt & the National Philharmonic! Makes me fall in love with the music all over again. 10/10 smile

Good find. These versions are truly audiophile. I gave away my JEDI album when I found these RCA editions off ebay, many years ago.

When RCA remastered the Classic Film Scores series some years back without Dolby I assumed that Star Wars would soon follow, but sadly it hasn't. I wonder if we'll ever get them. For myself, I originally was concerned by the broader tempi Gerhard employed, but over time I've come to appreciate how splendid these performances are.

Does anybody have — or know where to find — good large-sized images of the original LP covers?

EDIT:

CE3K & Star Wars finally found: https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61DjPbFDGtL._SL1280_.jpg

The others can be found at https://lpcover.wordpress.com/ (an excellent resource for LP covers)

I was not aware of this series on CD remastered without Dolby.

Would you be able to provide me with a cover picture from this series without Dolby, or at least a catalogue number(s).

Actually, I have looked back in my collection and found the releases you were referring to. They have red/yellow covers. I had assumed these were the remastered versions of the earlier Dolby versions.

Obviously not.

I have been attempting to compare both versions and am at a loss to figure out which version is the better sound.

Any observations would be of help.

Many prefer the non-Dolby, though a few disagree. The newer ones are certainly greatly detailed.

But think ... they're both good releases, and if you can't personally tell the difference, does it matter? Would you really have someone tell you what to prefer?!

The Dolby remasters allegedly came from the quadrophonic mixes of Gerhardt's RCA output. The exception being Jedi. Hell that one doesn't even use the master tape if the SPARS code is to be believed.

Well, I was being a little vague smile

I do suffer from tinnitus but having it for the past 30 years I have usually managed to ignore it, thank god.

But sometimes it does creep in to my listening experience, particularly when tired or after having coffee. Those tend to be the moments when my critical faculties are dampened somewhat.

When not plagued by that annoyance I have listened to the Dolby and non Dolby versions of Lost Horizon and find that the non Dolby version has a mid range that is detailed and expansive so that the entire soundstage is enhanced, compared to the Dolby version which sounds, as someone put it, muddied to me.

The yellow/red non Dolby versions are vastly better to my ears. Major improvement. Similar to the first, expanded release of Sunset Boulevard: The Classic Film Scores of Franz Waxman which came out years before the rest of the series. Much more detail across the whole orchestra. Which is why I had always hoped they'd get to reissuing Close Encounters/Star Wars at some point.

Thanks for your observations. I share your hope for the Close Encounters/Star Wars.

Gerhardt's recording of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK is fantastic! His RETURN OF THE JEDI follows closely behind, especially because we don't have to hear that Muppety gibberish in the finale.

I also recommend the Varujan Kojian/Utah Symphony recording on Varese of selections from the first three films. Expertly done!

Anyone heard of this new re-release of Gerhardt's SW + RotJ ?

Sony Classical / 12.12.19

(ESB is absent because in Varese territory I guess...)

Sound seems clearer though. Nice way to enjoy these marvelous interpretations.

Very nice, and sounding better I'm sure for not being Dolby Surround like the last versions. But what of the Close Encounters Suite that shared the Star Wars CD? That is Gerhardt's very finest recording of a Wiliams score in my opinion.

UPDATE: I just checked the sound of these on Spotify, compared directly with my non-Dolby Surround (european) CDs of these titles. Of course, Spotify provides less-than-CD-quality... so it could be misleading, but from what I hear there's a clear difference, with the new Sony sounding fuller, and the brass smoother. I see no U.S. CD releases listed (Amazon.com has mp3 but that seems to be all).

I wonder if they went back to the digital tape for Return of the Jedi for that, if said tape exists.

I did some comparison with my CDs vs. this album version on Spotify and they sound the same to me (but I have the "Dolby" version of the CDs...)

Yes, I think you are right. The "new" release as it appears on Spotify sounds exactly like the surround version of the CD (an old copy of which I just compared it with). Nothing is ever straightforward with this series.
