Is there any unreleased music?
JohnF

Yes there is a teeny tiny bit, including the only full-on quotation of Williams' shark theme. It's supposed to come IIRC in the middle of the "Shark Chase and Dolphin Rescue".

The JAWS 3D album is a re-recording I think. There are changes to some of the cues, such as the above.

listening to clips, there's a sense of fun in the music, but "full orchestra"? it sounds like little orchestra... or there's something odd with the orchestration... but the themes are catchy, for sure.

actually, it sounds like a pop musician making a "symphonic" score, if you know what I mean

anyone?

I agree with your assessment of the clips; it does sound pop-ish. I love it. Just ordered it.

Actually there is a lot of missing music. In fact I would compare the original JAWS 3-D album that is being released with the original JAWS album (vs. the original soundtrack) - it is a re-recording containing most of the thematic material (with different arrangements) but leaves out about half of the score.

Missing music from the album includes
- the pulsing, ominous music, for the death of baby shark (also partially used for the Universal Logo)
- the suspense music for the scene after the main titles when the skiers fall in the water and the shark approaches (also used for the scene in which the shark enters at the Sea World trough the sea gate and at the scene in which Bess Armstrong and Dennis Quaid sees the body of Overman).
- the music for the scene in which Dennis Quaid goes to see Bess Armstrong ridding the whale
- the source music on the speakers of the sea world (which is Parker's sea world theme)
- the film version of the love theme
- the music for the scene in which Bess Armsrong is training the dolphins and Philip Fitzroyce appears
- the film version of underwater kingdom
- the film version of Sea World opening day
- the introduction of the shark theme as momma shark first appears
- the attack on the skiers music
- the attack on Lea Thompson music
- the film version of Philip's Demise
- the shark theme for the breaking glass scene
and several other short pieces

This is a great album arrangement, and a fantastic release, no doubt - but I still miss the original soundtrack - maybe it will be released some day... until then this is a good representation of the score (but most renditions of the shark theme for the shark attack scenes are missing from the album - I particuraly miss the shark theme moment mentioned at "Shark Chase and Dolphin Rescue" and the different "triumphant version" at the end of "Philip's Demise" on the original score)

Also of note is that some portions of the music are directly based on the "Rite of Spring" by Stravinsky (just check the end of "Dolphin Rescue" and "The Shark's Gonna Hit Us")

Anyway a great album, and a very welcome release!

Considering some of the ***** that you love, you have very strange taste, Sir.

This score is excellent and the CD is very highly recommended. It certainly gets my vote as "Best score for a series of films initiated by John Williams" - and I include the Harry Potter series in that (I don't include Supergirl)

It's also HIGHLY recommended for those who want a preview of the scores that Parker wrote for the TV series DEMPSEY AND MAKEPEACE the following year because quite a bit of this material was carried over to that - including the ski-ing sequence at the start which, with a few tweaks, became the D&M theme!

This is a review of the album I've posted at soundtrack collector 4 years ago:

After the very succesfull first two scores for the JAWS series by John Williams, the third film was scored by the relatively unknow Alan Parker.

The resulting score is excellent. Its not a simple replay of John Williams themes from the first films (as are the Superman series soundtracks) but it is an all new score with its own themes, that makes more sparce (but effective) use of the classic SHARK Theme.

Similar to the first JAWS soundtrack released, the JAWS 3 album is a "concert re-arrangement" that is different from the music as heard in the film. But it is a very good and listenable soundtrack album.

As this score is still unavailable in CD one can only hope that, if and when it is finally released, it will contain both the music as reard in the film and the album arrangements (as Varese did with THE FURY and OMEN II).

The music included in the album is:

Side A

1) JAWS 3-D MAIN TITLE: This music is virtually identical to the film version (except for the supression of the "fish head floating" part - before the titles apear). The highlights are a very exciting music for the titles and the water skiers theme (a music that sticks to your head).

2) KAY AND MIKE's LOVE THEME: The album version of the love theme from JAWS 3-D is dominated by strings and flute. The film version is different and better (with Piano).

3) PANIC AT SEAWORLD: Based on the SHARK THEME this track contains some music not included in the film and some music for the Shark's first appearance at the "underwater restaurant" and the "attack on the underwater tunnels".

4) UNDERWATER KINGDON AND SHARK CHASE: For the scene where Kay and Mike explores the lagoon in the sub searching for Overman's body. The music in the album is very different for the more suspensful version contained in the film. On the album the music is more light, based on the SEAWORLD theme that is similar to the Love Theme.

5) SHARK CHASE AND DOLPHIN RESCUE: Different than the music in the film the music in the album does not have the SHARK THEME in the middle section. I prefer the film version, however the album version still is a great action cue.

6) SAVED BY THE DOLPHINS: Similar than the music in the film (except for a small section at the end of the track) this is the music for the Shark fight with the dolphins. The secondary Shark Motiv composed by Alan Parker is fully used at this track.

7) THE SHARK's GONNA HIT US!: Virtually identical to the film version (except for the omision of the shark theme for the infamous "breacking glass scene" at the beginning) this is the music for the shark's death at the end of the film. It is a very good action track (for a not that exciting scene) based on the secondary Shark Theme composed by Alan Parker.

Side B

8) IT'S ALIVE/SEAWORLD OPENNING DAY: One of the best tracks in the album includes the SEAWORLD Theme, the Dolphins Theme and the Ski Theme from the first track in a very uplifiting arrangement.

9) OVERMAN's LAST DIVE: Totally different than the version in the film, this track contains some suspense music and the shark theme for the film's first shark victim.

10) PHILIP'S DEMISE: It is a very good suspense track with some of the SHARK THEME included that ends in chaos as the sharks eats Philip. Unfortunatelly it does not contain the triumphant arrangement of the shark theme that plays in the film version after the shark eats Philip, istead it has a more quiet finale.

11) NIGHT CAPTURE: Very good action track for the best scene in the film. It is different (longer and even better) than the film version.

12) JAWS 3-D END TITLE: The dolphin and SEAWORLD themes for the film finale and end credits.

If you want to hear the music in the order of the film you should listen the score tracks in the following order:
(1) (9) (2) (4) (5) (11) (8) (3) (10) (6) (7) (12)

Fantastic analysis, Danbeck. And spot on!

It does strike me that Parker went out of his way to feature as little Williams-based material on the album as he could in favour of his own material, literally snipping it out from the middle of cues where necessary.

I guess you can't blame him for that, but it would be nice to have the whole thing.

I just love this score - it just has this, I don't know, creep factor about it. It was one of those "Oh my God I just have to buy this thing" moments I had back in the mid-80s.

I love the movie too. Bess Armstrong (of High Road To China fame) was hot in it.

I can't wait to get this CD.

I used to have a VHS tape of Jaws 3-D and the Road Warrior taped off First Choice in the early 80's. Used to watch it repeatedly and was always struck (even being only like, 8 yrs old)
by the End Title music that builds to that glorious swell as the dolphin bursts into the air and the film closes with a victorious freeze frame. That music always stayed with me. I can't wait to get my hands on this CD and experience that joy again.

Shame that Intrada couldn't licence the film cues frown Must be too expensive.

I've never heard the score so I'm not not too bothered.

Then you gonna be happy, as this track of the album is identical to the film version.

Someone's in trouble. Guys, this was obviously a leak that could seriously damage upcoming projects. In fact Intrada just reached out to me asking for my help in locking this down. Please be patient and refrain from bringing this up again. Thanks for understanding.

Lukas
