A great synth-dominated score that really elevates the film (I realize it's not a very well-loved film smile ). The vinyl soundtrack features 2 of Basil's original tracks, but there is a lot more great music from the film that's nowhere to be found. Who owns the rights to the music and is there any interest in the wake of Basil's untimely passing?

There is interest... from ME. All things Poledouris are sacred and must be preserved.

A definite interest for the complete score to "Summer Lovers" here as well!

I've never seen the film, but have the LP.
I've always quite liked the two tracks but wonder would I like a full CD worth of that material. How much score is in the film, in total? I imagine it's all electronic. This one, like Wired, is in my collection for completist reasons and I don't play them too often and I'm not sure I would want 30 some minutes(?) of this stuff, over other, more worthy (in my mind) unreleased stuff by him.

I have seen this film a zillion times not that it's a masterpiece of a movie but I have my personal reasons.

I don't think there is much score music but definitely there is more than those two tracks presented on the LP.

There might be more unused score though.

In any case, the score is something different from what Poledouris has done and that in itself makes it interesting to have on CD.

Whatever score music for "Summer Lovers" he has written would be a big welcome on my part.

As far as the film music, it is not your typical loud and bombastic score but rather a very subdued and relaxing type of new age/electronic music.

Something to listen to while reading, whooping around or even... dosing off.

If I had not known that Poledouris had written the score, I would have guessed Vangelis.

All told, there is probably around 12-13 minutes of score in the film, some elements are used more than one time in the film. Admittedly, it is not much, but there are some significant additional themes that are not represented in the officially released tracks, "Sea Cave" and "Search for Lina." I suppose, in terms of a promo album, this material would work best in tandem with another Poledouris project or in the form of a suite.

My favorite of the unreleased cues is the music used when Cathy and Lina bond (i.e. watching Michael dive and then as they travel around the island together)--it's about 2.5 minutes of continuous music.

Put what music there is for SUMMER LOVERS on a CD with RETURN TO THE BLUE LAGOON and you've got my money.

Twilight Time has announced that they will be releasing SUMMER LOVERS on Blu-ray in August. Since they usually feature an isolated score track, I'm hopeful that we will finally get Basil's brief, but lovely score in its entirety! smile

Amen!

Indeed! Can't wait. I'm surprised this didn't get a little more comment around here, especially given how popular Basil remains in these parts.

You may get a bit more excitement from people if Intrada or LLL announce they are releasing the complete scores to this and The Blue Lagoon (also given a complete iso score on Twilight Time Blu-ray) on CD. Blu-rays are more expensive and a lot of Poledouris fans don't feel the need to own the film so won't spend the money for it, especially if they have to go to the trouble of ripping the iso score off the disc...

As for me, I'm just glad that his music is getting preserved at least.

Certainly a stand-alone soundtrack release would be superb...since it hasn't come in all these years nor been hinted at, I'll say that the fact that Twilight Time is releasing the Blu-ray (very likely with isolated score, as is their common practice) is pretty damned exciting. As you say, the important thing is "his music is getting preserved at least."

Perhaps Twilight Time friend Bruce will find a way to get a CD of SUMMER LOVERS (perhaps paired up with another fitting Poledouris or MGM property) on his Kritzerland label.

It's about time Bruce put out a Poledouris on his fine label...

The score on the Blu-ray is presented as a music and effects track, making me fear that the score tapes are gonzo. Much of the score is heard in moments without dialogue over it in the film, so in many scenes the "isolated listen" isn't much different from the standard audio track. That said, there are a couple or three Poledouris cues that really benefit from finally being played without dialogue laid over them.

Confirmed: the blu-ray will feature the excellent FSM Poledouris documentary "His Life And Music". Worth buying simply for that - the movie is a bonus!

Yes, I've got the disc in hand. It's one of several worthwhile bonus features that Twilight Time has included.

Was poking around the Library of Congress online public catalog and Poledouris registered 26 pieces from SUMMER LOVERS in 1986 and now I can finally--I think--safely assume that Basil wrote the short synth-pop instrumental that plays in one of the club scenes when Michael is searching for Lina. I'm assuming it's either "Electric Disco" or "Synth Riff."

You can see all the track names here: https://bit.ly/32miWkd

I saw the film at the New Beverly a few months ago and there was a lot more score than I'd remembered, though it was all in that low-key synth style.
