Who's buying?

After his disappointments, zooba should weigh his pros & dons ... er ... cons.
This 1973 opus might annoy zooba after a couple months of overdosing on it.
Remember TAKE DON, HE'S DEAD and recall "DON" FOLD, SPINDLE OR MUTILATE - aren't these in zoob's worst 5 Goldsmiths?

That sample from above, starting around 33 seconds in, what makes that sound? Is that a instrument, electronic?

Sounds like a Moog synthesizer to me. Jerry was experimenting with electronics even back then but this is like a precursor to his electronic music on Logan's Run. Very interesting that he used it extensively from I saw of the suite on You Tube. I'll have to definitely pick this up since I love Jerry! big grin

This is a Goldsmith that didn't leap out at me at the time of the film's release as the film itself was pretty blah and seemed yet another attempt to jump on the Godfather bandwagon. Divorced from the mediocre film, I have a feeling I might really like it. Thank you, Intrada.

Ever since the announcement that INTRADA was soon releasing, I of course started obsessing. I pulled out my CD-R that a friend had made years back with all the music I could get from a VHS, albeit with scatters of dialogue and sounds of people being tortured or murdered or just kicked around a little which Goldsmith scored with intense music building to crescendos as their screams and mutterings increased. Upon listening today, I'm feeling Jerry approached the score more as a Thriller then what Rota did more lyrically and beautifully for THE GODFATHER. It's a hard listen as there really isn't much melody or sonic pleasantness other than the song and a few quiet instrumental readings of that theme. There is very very little of what sounds like an Italian or ethnic bit of music that plays quietly when one of the characters is talking to a lady about "the family" or when Uncle Tony is talking to a little girl. It sounds nice but is mixed very low and is quite covered by the dialogue, but you can hear it if you really focus. I'm hoping that this CD will actually perhaps have takes and alternates of that music which may not have been used in the film. More of the Italian Theme music. And perhaps it will feature the song OUR LAST NIGHT and it's instrumental variations, again not really heard in the film that much. We'll have to wait and see what we get. It might turn out pretty enjoyable in fact. Pretty confident the INTRADA team will of course do their best to present the material at it's best for us all to enjoy. Here's hoping that will be the case.

That's basically it for me until the CD is in my damn dirty ape paws.

Lastly, here's a fun experiment. Listen to Jerry's rejected TWO DAYS IN THE VALLEY Score and picture it for THE DON IS DEAD. Sounds like it just may have been a pretty good fit. It has the "Thriller" element used in DON, but also the nice atmospheric Italian stuff to boot.

This is a low key Goldsmith score for sure. I’m not expecting a revelation. But I love Goldsmith in thriller mode with 70s electronics adding to the atmosphere. I’m probably more excited this unreleased score is coming out. Hoping it is stereo. And as we only have the DVD experience to go by you never know what might not have made it to the film.

The BD of this film was released in Germany a few weeks ago. Picture and sound are very good and the score is fine .

Just finished my first spin through the entire CD. Very gritty and dark score, but with some very beautiful tracks also. Definitely second spin very soon. Sound quality was pretty good.
