I also have to say that the whole suite thing doesn't really bother me. Personally I rather have that than loads of short tracks and the whole album does flow wonderfully from beginning to end.

Well, if there was some actually editing I might have agreed with you. However, what happened was that 4 or 5 cues were lumped into the same track with a few seconds of space between each cue. And the timings of each track on the back art is wrong as well. What a terribly produced album. BTW, if you are ever interesting in separating the individual cues here is how I did it...

1. Theme from Les Miserables (2:41)
2. The Bishop / Javert (2:12)
3. The Quarry (1:17)
4. Javert Suspects (2:26)
5. Caring For Fantine / Valjean's Confession (4:18)
6. The Death of Fantine (2:33)
7. Flight from Vigau (9:45)
8. Valjean and Cosette (3:01)
9. The Wall (1:56)
10. Outside (1:05)
11. Marius and Cosette (5:16)
12. Valjean Remembers (1:30)
13. Funeral Attack (2:58)
14. Valjean Saves Marius (2:58)
15. Farewell (2:08)
16. Javert's Suicide (3:09)

Well I'm late to the party as usual, but having just bought this second-hand and having never seen the movie, I have to just say on first listening this is an astonishing piece of work. One of the most mature and intense scores by Poledouris that I have ever heard. Simply gorgeous.

What a terrible loss to film music was the untimely death of this great artist.

I agree 1000%. Due entirely to the music alone, I suspect this telling of the tale would be the most rewarding. As per liner notations, did you see that the whole was dedicated by the maestro to his ochestrator who had died?

Powerful and well structured.

His scores are POWERFUL.

I finally got into THE TOUCH and recommend it to anyone who enjoys his style. It's become one of my BP top ten.

I miss him. More--I miss his music.

I know for a lot of people Poledouris peaked early and never again reached the heights of Conan, but for me, THIS is his single greatest score! Would love an expanded/remastered release with separate tracks for the cues, though I've grown used to the four-movement "symphony" arrangement -- works better for this score than a lot of others since I usually prefer to listen to it all the way through anyway.

Fantastic score and I have no problems with the Suites format. The whole disc is just a wonderful listen from start to finish. Just wish it were longer.

Interesting... had never heard of this. Nice suite on youtube. Les Miserables was my first Poledouris score, at which point I went on a buying spree! smile

Thanks for the link Gone.

Hoping for a proper expanded release of Les Miserables from another Poledouris gem.

Les Miserables is one of the best works from Basil Poledouris and i certainly would buy an expanded release of this! I hope and waiting for it!

To Js Walsh- i liked the score alot, very few scores of his i didn't like, but i am surprise by your comment about Delerue, i find his music to be uplifting and beautiful not depressing, Interlude makes you fall in love, Agnus of God takes you to heaven, so does Salvador[many others, much of Steel magnolies make you want to frolic in the countryside, Maxie is so optimistic and uplifting, a sought of Mame- go out and live your life in fun, day of the dolphin, the beauty of solitude, Partners-fly away in wacky fun,, Joe VS the volcano- fall in love again, French revolution- prideful and majestic,Beaches- uplifting optimism, Maid to order- more pretty daffy spiritual fun,Crimes of the heart, heartful and warm,The black stallion returns-again uplifting and majestic, rich and famous- Forceful, beautiful and romantic,, etc etc etc etc, are we talking about the same composer here? I listen to his music to reach pass the problems of daily life with beauty and hope and truthfulness and joy.

Speaking of The Touch, did you know there are two releases of the score?

One is a cd and the other is a 5.1 DVD-A with some extra tracks.

I've been listening to Les Miserables lately and I've come around to agreeing with many of the sentiments above: this is a Poledouris masterpiece. Most of the time he made small or simple films feel immense and challenging; here, he gave a big story the perfect epic treatment. He also made fascinating use of minimalist arrangements, so while the music acknowledges the period it remains a modern score. The 50-minute album is well edited and a satisfying listen, but it makes me wonder if we'll ever get to hear more.

From what I've heard, I don't think there's too much more material. An unmentionable has about 10 minutes of additional material (some with sound effects), and the end credits are a cut-and-paste job.

Otherwise, yes, this is a great score, possibly the last REALLY great Poledouris score, and for my money the finest score of 1998.

There's also a rejected score by Gabriel Yared that needs to come out.

That'd make for a great double-CD release...expanded Poledouris on one disc (with proper track timings this time), and the rejected Yared music on the other. smile
