Perhaps this already has it's own thread and I missed it, but I'm surprised at how little attention this release has received. Anyway, finally received my copy yesterday and what a stunning piece of work! It's too early right now to say where this ranks in the North canon, but it's also hard to think of a score with more complex emotional layers packed so tightly. I'm positive that North's score will yield many many rewards and fresh discoveries over the oncoming years - "The Barricades" alone is going to take me years to fully appreciate. I realize that it's largely too late to buy this one if you missed it, but if you have any chance to pick it up for an even semi-decent price, pick it up!

I'm sure it's excellent. The North score and CANNON FOR CORDOBA are the two releases I wanted most. Maybe I'll get to hear it in the dim future....when my order arrives.

Mine is still... not here yet... so I can't comment on it. smile I imagine others are in a similar situation.

North is often hit and miss to me, but the soundclips on this one excite me quite a bit.

Varese is WAY BEHIND THE 8-BALL in shipping these out.

You can't discuss something you can't hear...even if you did order it six hours after it was first announced.

It makes you wonder... Didn't they have at least some of the product in ahead of time so that they could've started boxing it up on July 2nd? After that, getting a shipping label should take a few seconds, assuming their shipping system is designed properly.

I got mine days ago, and it's terrific. I got their confirmation that it was sent the day after I already received it, so the confirmations are obviously not as important as when you actually receive the discs. My advice is to ignore confirmations and just be happy when your CDs finally arrive. As somebody who runs a record label, I can say that the Post Office often bears some of the responsibility for things taking longer than you would like. You really can't blame VS until you receive your package and look at the postmark, if there is one.

And even if there is, and it's a few days later than you would have liked, they don't have a huge staff and have to package up and mail out thousands of orders. It's not easy!

And it's about a billion-and-eight degrees out here in southern California right now, so we try to go a little slower than normal so our motion doesn't cause us to spontaneously burst into flames!

How silly of us to complain.

Who do we think we are anyway...CUSTOMERS?

You can complain, but I'm just stating a fact that if Varese has to ship thousands of CDs out at once, they simply can't do that. SOME people will get their CDs before others. If Varese shipped to 2000 customers first and 2000 customers second, then the second 2000 would complain. But if they shipped to those second 2000 customers first, then the first 2000 customers who were shipped second would complain, if you follow my drift. So really there's no way for them to win, because they simply CAN'T mail every CD to everyone at exactly the same time. No company could!

When I used to order records by mail 20 years ago, it often took a month or more for my package to arrive. And you know, the longer it took, the more anticipation I had, and it was fun anticipation. I never once complained to the seller about "where's my records, dammmit?!"

Most people have SO MANY soundtracks in their collection, and ones they only recently bought and have not yet listened to more than once, if that many times. So it's not like they don't have anything to listen to while waiting an extra week or two to get yet another new release.

Of course you have a right to complain. I just think Varese has the right to not be able to physically get every CD to every single customer all around the country and all over the world at exactly the same time.

This is the club release I'm most interested in, but I don't have mine either (I didn't order mine from Varese, though). Can it be that only two people here have gotten it by now?

I'm really curious to hear what others think about it, so if you do have it, chime in!

I got mine a week ago, but my listening time is limited. I still haven't gotten to this one or "Anne of the Indies"!

The North is extremely listenable, and I'm very pleased with my purchase. It's not a "difficult" North release at all.

I appreciate your empathy for their situation.

I'm still not pleased knowing they've been shipping titles since at least July 12 (based on a post last Saturday from someone here who received his in the mail on July 14) and haven't managed to get through the first six hours of orders placed on July 2. (I'm indulging in "wishful" thinking that they fill orders on a first-come first-served basis).

What do you imply by saying "not a 'difficult' North release"?

It's very lyrical, tonal, and, well, pretty. It's not like some of his music which is very modern (in the vs romantic period sense). I just wish it were a bit louder...

How do you describe the musical style of "Les misérables" inside North's 1950's body of work? Is it a typical one? Does this score remind another one of the same period?
North's most-remembered opus was "A Streetcar named Desire": can you compare "Les misérables" with it?

There's a nicely scored scene in LES MISERABLES where Robert Newton, in a torn tee-shirt stands outside the prison walls, frustrated and anguished, with hands on head, yelling "Valjean! Valjean!" Is that what you mean? big grin

Music-wise only.
Can you make a statement now about these two musical works?

I certainly don't expect them to ship all the orders in a day or two, but many of these orders were placed on July 2nd and I'm assuming that at least SOME of the titles were in stock as of the 2nd. That's plenty of lead time to start putting stuff in boxes. If that's not the case then it sounds like they announced these discs too early.

I agree that they should ship out orders in the order that they were received, which apparently is not being done. I've had great service from Varese always, but they could certainly save themselves from a lot of criticism just by shipping these packages in order. However, folks should keep in mind that it was clearly stated on their site that these club discs wouldn't even start shipping until July 16! They began shipping early, so a lot of people got their packages before they were expected, and it always takes a week or so to get all of the orders out. If they'd simply shipped the orders in the order they received them, I can't see that there'd be any problem at all.
