They’re all gone now, those childhood fixtures who introduced us to thrilling action, debonair characters and an innocence never to be recaptured but always cherished.

With the recent passing the past year of Gordon Scott and, last week, Kerwin Mathews, the other individual who made up that Trinity was Guy Williams.

Pretenders to the throne may come and quickly go (their superficial sheen no match for Williams’ wonderful swashbuckling mixture of a western Clark Kent by day and the avenger of wrongs by night).

To paraphrase Highlander’s patented phrase:

There Can Be Only One

and Guy Williams will forever be THE Zorro for the ages

.....There's only ONE Zorro.....and Guy Williams will forever be THE Zorro for the ages.....

You sound like a silly little fanboy, Neo!!! big grin

"MY" Zorro is Tyrone Power in THE MARK OF ZORRO in 1940, and those before me probably would cast their vote for Douglas Fairbanks, Sr.

"My" Zorro could speak engagingly, with dialog tripping off the tongue, and involve himself in love-fests with the likes of Linda Darnell, and sword-fests with the likes of Basil Rathbone!

"Your" Zorro is like a fop, prancing around with sword in hand on the hot, desolate, pioneer stretches of backlot in Burbank, California. big grin

I totally and 1000% agree with neo.
Guy Williams is the one and only just as Burt Ward is the only Robin.

Guy Williams' Don Diego had many facets. Cool calm and collected but also distressed but also hot headed and even down right angry to the point of rage. The sword fights had class and were fought with great elegance and visual flair. Then there's the added advantage of the excellent supporting cast. Most of all sergeant Garcia. As a child I didn't like him at all. I have always had a serious dislike for the comical element but as an adult I now see that Garcia was a multi layered character. A victim of circumstance who was a fool with intervals of great insight and very funny remarks.
Then there is corporal Reyes and of course Bernardo. Also not to be underestimated: Diego's father.
For all of these characters the saying applies: there's only one and each of them are the only one of that which was and that which shall come.

Great stories, great production value, great costumes and sets.

By the way: those episodes about "The Eagle". Was that a disguised subplot by "subversive" Disney employees referring to the US? US as in the American eagle? Trying to seize power in Spanish speaking territory or at least meddle in its affairs? After all many a South American country qualifies as inspiration for such an analogy story? Disney handed out many "communists" to Mc Carthy so maybe some people thought they put one over on him by putting in "The Eagle" right under Disney's nose.

Kind regards.

D.S.

Indeed. And who could be his nemesis, his "foil" as it were (pun intended!), but the ever sinister and oily Basil Rathbone?

Disney handed out many "communists" to Mc Carthy

If I had a nickel for every leftist who is so locked in to their picture of Joseph McCarthy as this controlling demon over all facets of America in the 1950s that they keep making the same inane mistake of linking him to investigations of Hollywood communists over and over again, I could pay off the national debt.

I'm with Manderley.

TYRONE POWER is THE Zorro for the ages.

The Disney version seems totally creepy now. Guy Williams prancing around in pants WAY too tight...even for Zorro.

Ok Guys.....How many of you had one of these back in 1959 ?

...or, one of these ?

My favourite Saturday comic in 1959:

I have to agree with you though Manderley......as much as I used to enjoy Disney's Zorro......Ty Power will always be the REAL Zorro!
