battleaxe Exactly the right word. Speaking of little old ladies, Your Grace, I just saw an episode of "Dear Ladies" and Dame Hilda told a mouse joke. I'm going to type it out to see if you or your ilk can explain it to me, because it's so terribly British I cannot understand it. Do look for it in one of my "Hey, Brits!" threads soon, will you??

Sweet little Polly Holliday played the best mean old lady. Her over-the-top performance in Gremlins made her the villain you just love to hate. I adore the relish with which she delivers her speech to Billy describing what she'd do with his dog and a spin-dryer on high heat. I also loved her performance in Amazing Stories, which elevated what could have been a forgettable episode to an annual must-see in our home. For old ladies of the comic persuasion, I go with Betty White and Chloris Leachman, who seem to have been old since before I was born! It didn't matter how good or bad the part was, they turn any role to gold. For nice old ladies I'll mention Eve Smith, who played many tiny roles throughout the 80s. I knew her from Star Trek IV as the dialysis patient, and Big Top Pee Wee as the fast food waitress, and also two episodes of Amazing Stories. As a kid I went through an autograph-collecting phase and wrote to many of the secondary actors in the Star Trek films. She was so tickled to receive fan mail and we exchanged several letters. Her bubbly on-screen persona was the same in real life. She was so proud of her work, no matter how small the role, and I'm very thankful to have known her.

Sweet little Polly Holliday ...... I also loved her performance in Amazing Stories, which elevated what could have been a forgettable episode to an annual must-see in our home. Not on video, not in the library. Dang! I love Polly Holliday! Thanks Michael for reminding me about her.
