I got a great review copy in the mail from Australian label Votary (www.votarydisk.com): INNER SPACE by Sven Libaek (not the Joe Dante film here!). This is the vintage jazz used as the score-within-the-score in The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou. It's an undersea documentary score from 1973 and reminds me, of all things, of '60s and '70s action-adventure jazz from Hanna Barbera, with that moody, traveling flavor. CD is mastered from vinyl but sounds very good. Thought I'd mention it. John Bender, are you listening?

An even better CD is coming soon from Libaek: SOLAR FLARES, which is a jazzy and fairly funky re-issue of a library LP that he did in 1974.

That's totally kewl, Sir Lukas. Orchestral jazz along the lines of Hoyt Curtain's music. Can't wait.

PS: I'll be sure to wake up Bender and bring this to his attention if he doesn't already know.

How bizarre! Trunk Records released a version of this only recently too:

The Trunk issue is more of a compilation of Libaek tracks from four separate soundtracks, 'Inner Space' being just one (and consists of four tracks). The new CD is the *full* soundtrack to 'Inner Space'.

Sven Libæk. Sounds Danish or something. Where's he from?

Ah, you Sven Libeak purist, you.

You know what they say: you wait for ages for a Sven Libaek CD and then... and they're both called "Inner Space". Spooky.

' Tis a bit confusing, I grant you!!

Actually, I'm fairly new to Libaek. I have become aware of his library work in recent times. Also, he scored an Australian police series back around 1971 called BONEY (about a half caste Aboriginal detective) - it got shown here in the UK several times. There's an interview with Libaek here:

Anyone know if any of the actual documentaries that Sven scored are available ?
Discovered Sven back in '07 when I heard "Inner Space" being mastered in the studio next door to mine here in Melbourne, at the famous 180 Bank street (Metropolis / Armstrongs) studios !
I went in and immediately said.."what the hell is this" .. They though I was taking the piss... But I said I LOVE THIS STUFF... So they gave me the fist test CD master ! I still have it smile

"Inner Space" is a fantastic album. Really groovy stuff. I bet Advise & Consent would love it.

I picked up Votary's LP release of this album last month. It's a cool record, at times on the verge of sounding like a 70s low budget spy thriller and at other times bordering on kitschy elevator muzak, but always a groovy listen. Unfortunately my cat took a liking to it straight away and managed to get one of his claws into side one when I was flipping it over. There's now a loud repeating POP for almost a minute on that side as a result. And it drives the cat crazy.

I don't know if it's still available, but Libaek's album Solar Flares - library music that he recorded years ago, and which I mentioned earlier in the thread (yikes - seven years ago!) - is well worth a listen. There are a few tracks on YouTube, eg 'Lift Off':

Some of the music he did for the Australian TV series Boney was released on an LP; I keep hoping that someone might have a go at putting that on CD, if any tapes still exist.

Madman has released the entire series of INNER SPACE on DVD in Australia.
There's probably some copies left which include the original CD soundtrack.

I looked his name up on IMDb. It shows he's scoring a new film called "The Nymph". He also scored something last year.

Heads up, amigos:

Votary Records recently released on CD & vinyl Sven Libaek's score for the 1966 documentary NATURE WALKABOUT, and it's airy '60s jazz vibes (literally, since the vibraphone features prominently in the music) are making for a refreshing listen on this cool summer evening.

Unlike INNER SPACE, which came in a jewel case, this one's packaged in a digipak (just an FYI for those who care about such things). Handsome set. Great music. Highly recommended.
