This morning, I listened for the first time in years to Nicolai's score for the 1971 giallo "La Notte Che Evelyn Uscì Dalla Tomba", released by Digitmovies in 2005.
There's a 3-part suite entitled "La Festa", the third part of which, "Love Rendez-Vous", uses a melody extremely similar to Morricone's popular "Lontano" theme from "Gott Mit Uns", released in 1969.

The Lontano theme can be found here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IM9chl3JjrI
Nicolai's love theme is the last part of track 9 here http://www.camoriginalsoundtracks.com/site/index.php?site=ost&path=cd&idcd=478
(for instance, 3:12 to 3:30 into the track)

It could be a case of either tongue-in-cheek/friendly citation (the two composers were still partners back in '71), or maybe could the original Lontano theme have been co-composed by Nicolai?

or is this post just another opportunity to salute the Masters?

...or one of the themes from cristo del oceano sounds like the red tent with a couple of notes changed.

I have enjoyed reading through this old thread.
Some interesting voices there.
I'm glad it was bumped.

Me, too. And such controversy is far from unusual. In seeking to populate my music database with composers' names I've found more than a few instances of queried ownership. The story behind Why Do Fools Fall in Love - Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, for example, left me befuddled!

See Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Why_Do_Fools_Fall_in_Love_(song) and have a good laugh.

Mitch.

I'm reviving this thread because I'd like to know how Nicolai spent his time in his last years. According to imdb, he didn't have more than 4 scoring assignments from 1982 to his death. Was he still making music / records outside the movie/TV industry?

This is something that I've often wondered about myself
Love Nicolai's music so much that I have picked up everything that has been released on cd by him.

Elvis Costello once wrote a song about divorce with this line: "And now all our friends must choose/Who they favor, who they lose."

It could be Nicolai fell victim to this phenomena post the split.

Also, as with many great artists as they age, there has been a lot of legacy building with Morricone. The awards, the books, the press profiles, the many, many compilation releases -- things from the past that don't fit the narrative get obscured, or dropped altogether. It doesn't even have to be a 'conspiracy" -- it's often an organic thing with a life of its own. As fan and admirer of both, I really don't have room in my head to wrestle with these questions that may have uncomfortable answers. I'm all too prepared to "print the legend" as it were and enjoy the music. Not a very scholarly way to go, but there it is.

Be wise enough to know what one can change and be wise enough to know what one can't change NOW and hope it can be change for the good in the future. There are always truths and always false info. The challenge is to find them, without driving yourself crazy. As stated above, maybe some things are better not to know.
