We've done similar threads before, but I can't find them.

We all know of amazon.com, cduniverse.com, play.com and ebay.com , but what are some other recommended online CD and DVD stores out there? Places that have good PRICES, first and foremost. I'm NOT talking about soundtrack specialty outlets here, and I'm also looking for stores that ship ALL OVER THE WORLD, not only USA.

Thanks.

Try:

http://www.deepdiscountcd.com
http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com

Free shipping does not apply to international orders, though.

Yes, you saved me the trouble of mentioning them, but I was very pleased with their service and prices.

Andy Dursin has a list of some very good onlie stores on his site...

http://andyfilm.netfirms.com/phpbb/nfphpbb/viewtopic.php?t=98

I think you may have to register to access his list tho.

But anyway, http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/ is probably the cheapest source for Region 1 DVDs, tho Amazon.com probably has a better selection

www.amazon.co.uk is still my number one choice for UK / Region 2 DVDs (and they actually arrive in America sooner than orders from Amazin.com!).

I also like http://www.ezydvd.com.au/ in Australia and http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/ for Japanese DVDs.

CDJapan has Conan The Barbarian with the stereo transfer (but there's is NTSC, so its not time-compressed) and its only about 9 bucks!

Since someone here called attention to a Star Trek movies special last year, I have ordered many DVDs regularly from DeepDiscountDVD (plus a few scores).
They offer very interesting bargains all the time.

I have just received Firefly & The Outer Limits (Season 1, 1963-4), as part of a "Buy 1, Get 1 free" promotion (which ends tonight).
I also received yesterday another DVD from their bi-annual codeword 20% off sale.

The shipping costs are most reasonable, and are only charged once-- meaning, they ship each item as it is available, but only charge you, say, $12 once, even they have have to send 15 DVDs separately (the shipping costs are a function of the order's total, not the number of items).

The only time I had a problem with the disc was this summer; one of the 8 DVDs from the Matrix set was flawed; instead of having me ship it all back as per procedure, they directly sent me another set to save shipping costs.

You might try this site to compare prices among multiple sellers:

http://www.dvdpricesearch.com/

Generally, I've found the cheapest (NEW) prices here:

http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/

Service has been good too.

If you don't mind purchasing used, try Amazon. Each thing Amazon sells also has the "Buy New and Used" option, where other sellers sell through Amazon. The seller pays the selling fee, you don't. And I've never been taken on it, since the guarantee is actually through Amazon. Been surprised several times. I thought I was buying a used (open) copy of a DVD and what shows up is a DVD new in shrink wrap with the security labels still in place.

Amazon is THE PLACE to find cd's and DVD's cheap- I got a copy of THE DROWNING POOL that was only available in the Paul Newman box set as an individual DVD for a few dollars. You gotta love Amazon. I've picked up soundtracks for less than 5 beans.

Oh, and before purchasing a DVD, I always check this comparison site:
http://www.dvdcompare.net/

I love "making of" documentaries, and I suppose as a film & film music scholar, you must be interested in those as well, Thor.

The terrible problem with regions is that the DVD editions vary greatly in content, which is a huge shame, and considerably undermines the point of having regions; besides the desire of getting a DVD soon, I am sure many people buy from other regions to get the best extra features-- and there is no reason any part of the world should be entitled to more content than the others.
That is one thing I am concerned about HD discs (besides the issue of having two competing formats): the handling of regions; I suppose ways will be found, but the studios might find better encryption methods; but then, the manufacturers (who also own studios) do make it fairly easy to make players region-free.

(Sorry for the digression)

This thread is 10 years old, so completely outdated now.

But I wanted to ressurect it, as I'm looking for any online vendors that sell CD's still. It doesn't matter if it's a first market or secondary market site. I'm NOT looking for the direct outlets of soundtrack specialists and labels (I'm well aware of those), but rather 'general stores'.

My most-used record store in the past 10 years was play.com, which was sold to Rakuten last year, but now Rakuten is closed too. And I need an alternative to Amazon, cdwow and e-bay -- especially in this day and age of extremely high shipping costs. Remember, I live in Norway, not the US.

So -- is there any site you prefer?

I haven't used them for a while now (Amazon has claimed all my money ... smile) but I had perfect service, etc. from:
http://www.grooves-inc.co.uk/product_info.php/cPath/48/language/en/currency/GBP/products_id/388455
- I think they're based in Switzerland.

I'd certainly go looking there if Amazon can't supply.

Mitch

Music box records.

Thanks, but that would be a soundtrack specialty label. I'm looking for GENERAL entertainment stores.

Thanks! That's the kind of thing I'm looking for.

I'll second the recommendation for Grooves Inc. I use them fairly regularly to get German and French imports. It's pretty rare to find any retailer that offers free international shipping, and they also fairly regularly have promo codes for 10% off your order as well.

Aside from that most of my orders are with yesasia.com and cdjapan.co.jp, but that's mostly if you're looking for Asian imports.
